Why the heck did they stop supporting the other app?
----------------------------------------I said for Bonic to use max 30% of the processor, but it jumps to 100% every 3 seconds... why is that setting even there??? I guess I'm going to stop helping the world community grid...its a shame really. edited for inappropriate language...CIH [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 12, 2008 12:30:17 AM] |

hi thebrandon,
----------------------------------------We already have a thread with that title somewhere. No, pretty much all is fine with BOINC except that throttle, which is specifically a heat control mostly for laptops. Thus by design it runs with 60% for 3 seconds and pauses 2 seconds. At 50% it would run 1 second and pause 1 second. On desktops its perfectly fine to run 100%. There is a push to have a smoother implementation in the next after the next BOINC release, so maybe BOINC 6.4 or 6.6. I use a 3rd party tool called Threadmaster on the XP & Vista clients. Even smoother than the old WCG throttler as it is possible to set different percentages for different applications. Sorry [added: Is it a dual core machine, because you say 30%? The old client could only use 1 core. BOINC can use as many as you allow. In the case of a heat issue, it's better to let 1 core run 100% and still keep the temp in check. Let us know and we'll get you going and take the suck out at the same time]

I'm sorry that you feel this way about BOINC. Unfortunately WCG had no choice but to stop using the United Devices client as the company that made it no longer supports it and is apparently out of business.
The CPU throttling in BOINC is very primitive, as you have noticed. However, if you are using Windows, there are several programs that can limit the amount of CPU that a program uses. Unfortunately I can't remember them off hand, as I don't use Windows. I am sure someone else will remember their names, though. BOINC has the advantage of being open-source and if it ever lost funding at Berkeley, IBM could take over development. IBM/WGG has already contributed many improvements to the BOINC client, it used to be a real horror to set up and use. Please don't let this put you off. |

Hello
I did try to use BES but is it anyway to have it increase the CPU percentage to BOINC or can it only decrease it? Thanks to help me |

With any of these tools you need to start by only employing 1, speak set BOINC to 100% and use the tool to gauge.

1) Can the computer be damaged if it runs 100% continuously? What about current consomption?
2) I installed THREADMASTER, but It seems like I cant set it to 70%. I'd like my cpu to run 70% while BOINC Is working but THREADMASTER stays to 100%. How to fix it? I did set it to 70% in the register. |

Hello Gratmoutt,
CPUs are designed to run at 100%. However, laptops often have insufficient cooling (necessary limitations due to size, weight and power) so it is a good idea to use temperature monitoring software to find out your laptop's limitations. Threadmaster really works well. So something is wrong. Here is our main post explaining how to use Threadmaster: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16084#125855 Lawrence |

Just updated the FAQ to remove any UD agent references, tweaked some language and added a little conversion table for easy selection of percentages for the different CPU's (not included dual clovers
---------------------------------------- )It's supposed to work on Vista, but no one has successfully done so yet.
