I'm seeing this error on multiple projects when my laptop is running on battery and not connected to the net. Here's the messages from the latest instance:
----------------------------------------6/9/2008 7:09:20 PM||Suspending network activity - user request 6/9/2008 7:49:35 PM|World Community Grid|Task dddt0402h0471_100023_1 exited with a DLL initialization error. 6/9/2008 7:49:35 PM|World Community Grid|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reboot your computer. 6/9/2008 7:49:35 PM|World Community Grid|Restarting task dddt0402h0471_100023_1 using dddt version 605 6/9/2008 8:19:58 PM|World Community Grid|Task dddt0402h0471_100023_1 exited with a DLL initialization error. 6/9/2008 8:19:58 PM|World Community Grid|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reboot your computer. 6/9/2008 8:19:58 PM|World Community Grid|Restarting task dddt0402h0471_100023_1 using dddt version 605 6/9/2008 8:25:22 PM||Resuming network activity I suspect that it is coinciding with the WU trying to checkpoint. I've seen this after a reboot and even after having reinstalling BOINC 5.10.45 using the Repair option. I haven't tried deleting BOINC completely and reinstalling. As you can see, I click on Activity, Network activity suspended before dropping the connection to the net. This is on a laptop with Win XP Pro. |

Well, suspending network activity has nothing to do with this. I'm not totally sure this impacts crunching either. May just be another one of those "finished files" thing.

Well, suspending network activity has nothing to do with this. I'm not totally sure this impacts crunching either. May just be another one of those "finished files" thing. Okay, uninstalled BOINC and then reinstalled. Still get this error on WUs that BOINC is crunching while my machine is on battery and has no network connection. It does appear to occur each time BOINC is trying to checkpoint the WU. It also appears that the checkpoint is failing and the WU goes back to the previous checkpoint so I'm losing any progress made while running disconnected on battery. So far, it doesn't seem to corrupt the WU but basically it seems like crunching with no network connection is total waste. Anyone have any ideas? |

What does your laptop do while running on battery that it does not do when connected to power? Does it power down the hard disk?

I checked the power scheme and set up one that I have it using that has the same settings for AC and battery: ![]() I still get the DLL errors. Uninstalling and reinstalling BOINC didn't help either. |

Hello keithhenry,
Thanks for the diagnostic information. I am puzzled, so I guess the only question is whether or not BOINC returns Valid results, despite the DLL initialization error. If so, then we can ignore this error message. Laptops have a lot of special software running on them to handle power management, etc. Lawrence |

It appears that checkpoints fail and the WU goes back to the last one so effectively you can't crunch disconnected. I'm still working on possibilities. |

Not sure if this will help or hinder your ponderings, but I believe I've seen similar DLL init error messages a few times in the past when my laptop has been running on battery -- more specifically, I think its happened when I've plugged back in (i.e. gone from being plugged in, to battery, then back to plugged in). If memory serves me correctly, it did not involve a "suspending/resuming network activity" message, but rather a "suspending computation - on batteries"/"resuming computation" message pairing, with a DLL error message inbetween. I also sometimes see the DLL error when I've put my laptop into hibernate mode (when I take it home with me from work), such as tonight (left work around 6:50pm, got home and powered laptop back up at 8:50pm): 6/18/2008 6:29:13 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result lt837_00007_14 checkpointed 6/18/2008 6:47:40 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result lt837_00007_14 checkpointed 6/18/2008 8:50:45 PM|World Community Grid|Task lt837_00007_14 exited with a DLL initialization error. 6/18/2008 8:50:45 PM|World Community Grid|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reboot your computer. 6/18/2008 8:52:30 PM|World Community Grid|Restarting task lt837_00007_14 using hpf2 version 518 I'm not seeing these DLL error on a consistent or frequent basis...and its usually several hours (or days) after-the-fact that I've even noticed the error in the messages tab. The WUs finished successfully, so frankly I just shrugged it off thinking it was probably just my laptop trying to be naughty . I can try to keep a closer eye on it, and see if I can make note of any other data that might be of interest, if you think it will help. (BTW, my laptop is a ThinkPad running XP Pro/SP2, BOINC 5.10.45. BOINC is configured to NOT crunch when running on battery.) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 19, 2008 6:33:47 AM] |

Oddly, all the battery related problems I ever recall seeing have been with Thinkpads.
I suggest disabling the IBM power management, and just using the basic Windows functionality. See if that solves the problem. |

Don't see it explicitly, but assume that BOINC is set to run even when on battery? If so, for the experiment, set it to suspend and see how it resumes.
----------------------------------------I'm seeing this on occasion on laptop when coming out of hibernation or out of longer battery suspend / power resume. Now tending to suspend processing prior to hibernating / battery operation, so it can write what it needs to. Also is "Leave in Memory" On or Off?
