BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

I've been fooling with the processor usage settings (advanced/preferences) in an attempt to avoid what is perceived to be operator/BOINC clashes in a w98 2ed OS. The agent is set to not function while the machine is in use - to wait 3 minutes from cessation of keyboard/mouse activity.

What actually occurs is that the agent suspends after the settings window is closed, then restarts three minutes later, regardless of operator input activity. It can only be resuspended by opening/closing the settings window, or hitting the snooze button (different feature).

No difference whether the window is reduced to the toolbar or closed completely.

Any suggestions?

Re: BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

This sounds familiar. You've set the activity menu to operate according preferences? Sometimes conflicts develop between the website preferences and the local prefs. Open them up and hit the clear button to ensure that you truly use one set. Afterwards build them up again when things have started to operate according expectation.

Re: BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

There is only one default profile used on all machines and operating systems. I've altered this default to reflect the intended suspension by user activity.

The preferences are not visibly overwritten on the w98 machine in question.

The only keyboard or mouse operations recognized as user activity is opening the BOINC client window. No operator input is required to maintain suspension while the window is selected. Just leaving it open doesn't help, the BOINC client window has to be open and selected. If another window is selected, operator input is not recogized.

The only freezes I'm dealing with occur when the operator and BOINC are use the machine simultaneously. The only way to ensure uninterrupted use at present, is to disable the agent completely.

Re: BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

Given you've ascertained that there are no local prefs conflicts (thus no global_prefs_override.xml file interfering with your website preferences stored in the global_prefs.xml), no idea.

If in an other experiment to let a screensaver come up and the mouse / keyboard is able to see this, BOINC should do too. Maybe the drivers are not up to date, but since MS has stopped to support W98 SE How fully tested BOINC is for W98 is not clear, but generally it expects for everything to be up to snuff.

Re: BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

The screensaver function has always worked normally, though it is not currently employed, and the powersaving feature on the display has no trouble responding to user input.

When I 'clear' local preferences on the local machine, the default settings still seem to be for continuous operation, though this does not follow the default profile. The amount of processor use does alter to the default value.

I've changed this immediately-visible setting to see how long it takes to work its way through to actual local machine function. Supposedly the other default settings will show up at the same time and I can see if suspend behaviour improves.

Problem is - I don't want BOINC running on this machine while it's in use, so this could take some time.

Re: BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

So let's positively confirm: Does your Activity Many have the "Run Based on Preferences" selected? It makes no sense for it stopping and resuming after 3 minutes, and now it running continuously. That implies the top option of the Activity menu is on.

Re: BOINC will not suspend from keyboard/mouse

From BOINC 5.10 and onwards a separate program called boinctray.exe is running that checks for keyboard and mouse activity. If it isn't running, BOINC won't suspend when you're active.

There is no executable by that name located on any of the windows OS machines. running BOINC here. Perhaps you mean boincmgr.exe?

The menu is checked for 'run based on preferences'.

On this machine, the program recognises only one condition; an open and active BOINC client window. If the window is closed or inactive, the program restarts in three minutes, regardless of operator activity on the keyboard or mouse.

Three other machines with three different OS (including a W98 device) react to keyboard actvity normally, suspending as directed.

No, I mean boinctray.exe which comes with all BOINC 5.10.20 and upwards versions. It runs in the background, not in a DOS window. It's needed on all versions of Windows to guarantee the correct detection of the keyboard and mouse activity.

Parts of BOINC:
boinc.exe
boincmgr.exe
boinccmd.exe
boinctray.exe
boinc.scr (in Windows directory)
