No, I mean boinctray.exe which comes with all BOINC 5.10.20 and upwards versions. It runs in the background, not in a DOS window. It's needed on all versions of Windows to guarantee the correct detection of the keyboard and mouse activity. Parts of BOINC: boinc.exe boincmgr.exe boinccmd.exe boinctray.exe boinc.scr (in Windows directory) I repeat: there is no boinctray.exe on any W98, W2k or Wxp OS here, using v5.10.45 of the BOINC agent. What OS are you working with? Googling the file name indicates that it was a late addition for use with Vista OS (for SETI clients ?) and WXP-64bit. Anyone know what's up with this executable? Might it's presence solve the current issue in a non-64bit OS? RL |

The standard 5.10.45 distribution comes with boinctray.exe. Not sure, but it runs on my Vista box, though not on any of the XP-SP1's. It's in all the XP client's program directories for sure to include one that still uses 5.10.30.

I repeat: there is no boinctray.exe on any W98, W2k or Wxp OS here, using v5.10.45 of the BOINC agent. What OS are you working with? Not that it matters that much, but Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro. Even when I build my own BOINC, that file is in there. That it isn't in your version may be because someone deleted it. BOINC will run without it, it just won't react to the keyboard/mouse movements going inactive. You can unpack BOINC to another directory to see it. From a command line, navigate to the directory the BOINC installer is in, then type boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe /a and press Enter. There is a space between the .exe and the /a The installer will ask you where to unpack to, give it a destination directory. Then when it is done, go to that directory, Program Files, BOINC. (After you're done with it you can delete the whole directory if need be) Do know that the boinctray.exe file does not have a BOINC icon. It has the standard Windows executable icon.

From a command line, navigate to the directory the BOINC installer is in, then type boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe /a and press Enter. There is a space between the .exe and the /a The BOINC installer on all these machines is: 'wcg_boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe'. Perhaps that has something to do with the missing executable? Anyone at WCD care to comment? I know this sounds silly, but I've just realised that the 'snooze' function has no automatic time limit. Using this appears to be the least intrusive solution, on this one troublesome W98 machine, at this time. RL |

When I read this all nothing but more question marks arise.
----------------------------------------The snooze function via the tray icon is fixed 60 minutes, the one via the acitivity menu is indefinite. the wcg package is identical. I just did the /a thing and when it unpacks the file (boinctray.exe) is stored in a subdir called windows together with the boinc.dll and boinc.scr files. The wcg distro has some extras like wcg icons and skin plus a check to see if the UD agent is there offering to uninstall it plus some bits that the corporate/school partners like disabling of the reference site checking.

When I read this all nothing but more question marks arise. Same here. the wcg package is identical. I just did the /a thing and when it unpacks the file (boinctray.exe) is stored in a subdir called windows together with the boinc.dll and boinc.scr files. Why would boinctray.exe and boinc.dll need to be in the Windows directory? You sure about this? Goes to get the WCG installer and look for myself. You're right. How Weird. (I've sent an email to Rom and Kevin (yes, I know Kevin is on vacation)).

Well lucky for you, the original boinc_5.10.45 does it too.... that's why I said identical.

I unpacked 5.10.45 and 6.2.6, both show boinctray.exe going to the Program Files\BOINC folder.
----------------------------------------Downloads 5.10.45 again. Ok, not identical. In the Program Files\BOINC folder of normal 5.10.45, I have boinc.dll and boinctray.exe. Yes it's in the Windows folder as well, but it's quite missing in the WCG version.

Making this more clear.
----------------------------------------I just downloaded and unpacked BOINC 5.10.45 and WCG 5.10.45 In BOINC 5.10.45 in the Windows folder, I have boinc.dll, boinc.scr and boinctray.exe Same in WCG 5.10.45 In BOINC 5.10.45 in the Program Files\BOINC folder, I have all the BOINC files including boinctray.exe In the WCG version it lacks boinctray.exe

The snooze function via the tray icon is fixed 60 minutes, the one via the acitivity menu is indefinite. This I discover the hard way. I'll try to find the activity menu suspend and give it a try. the wcg package is identical. I also see the boinctray executable sitting in the installer Windows directory, with boinc.dll and boinc.scr. Everything else is in the program files\BOINC directory. I expect that the executable doesn't make it into the actual BOINC installation for a 32-bit OS, though. RL |
