WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Upon installing the World Community Grid client on my home PC, it asked me to close MSN Messenger because it needs to write/overwrite some files MSN Messenger uses, so I did. The client worked fine thereafter, but MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger would both show an error dialog box with a hexadecimal address when trying to log in. MSN Explorer doesn't work anymore either. sad Also my Norton IS and Antivirus are screwed up now as a result.

Anybody had similar experiences??

I am trying to get my MSN back...
I uninstalled the WCG client.
A system restore didn't help.
Uninstalled MSN 6.x ..I shall try re-installing 6.x or 7 Beta and test logging in again.

I really hope I can get my MSN back! (also thank goodness for the new webmessenger) smile

I don't use MSN client myself so cannot help you on that. However, you could have a look at GAIM which is a multiprotocol instant messenger similar to trillian but it is free. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, GroupWise Messenger, and Zephyr networks.

You can find more information here

Re: WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Borg1,

I use the free version of Trillian to connect to AIM, MSN, and Yahoo and have had no problems with WCG. Is there some functionality in MSN that you need besides the messenger? If not, I'd consider switching to Trillian Free or GAIM (as stares suggested), and see if you can then run WCG as well as your new messenger software.

If this is not an option, please use the Contact Us form to email WCG support, and we can try to help you figure out the problem.

Thanks,
Nels

cool Re: WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Borg1,
None of this should have happened when you installed WCG on your system. Something was wrong but I do not know what. WCG is not allowed to install or to run by various Internet security programs, but the only problem it can cause is to another instance of the WCG or United Devices Agent.
Yeah, I know, it did happen. . . But if you can get your old software on the system again, it should all run with no conflicts. There was some strange state in your computer when you were installing WCG. The best thing to do if you get a strange problem during installation is to stop the installation, reboot, and make sure you have a clean state before trying to install again.

Re: WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Hi Borg1,

I'm running both Trillian and MSN 6.xxx on my computer too, but the client's installer did not ask me to do something funny with another software (which is quite strange for an installer).

Maybe you should check for viruses/trojans etc.

best regards,

Andreas

Re: WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Hello Borg1,

Like nelsoc and stares, I also use an alternative IM client (Trillian, like nelsoc), and I did NOT encounter any problems... And I was EXPECTING problems, because the WCG-agent download page suggest the agent would only work with Win2000/XP, whereas I'm running it with WinME!

Do not abandon us yet, but try to get everything except the agent working again first. Then reboot, make sure that all programs (even those in the system tray) are disabled temporarily and THEN install the agent. Everything SHOULD work fine under those circumstances (although no one can actually GUARANTEE anything, I'm afraid sad ).

Re: WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Hi again,

I rebooted off WinXP CD to re-install windows core files and it worked. I would have to re-install the latest service packs all over again etc., I even installed MSN Beta 7.2 and everything seems to work now.
I have not installed the WCG grid agent yet though. I can/might try that once more?

I probably could have just deleted three files that showed up out of nowhere and saved a lot of time, but I didn't know about them at the time. They kept appearing on the process list even after ending them, they were also in the \run system registry and the system32 directory.
[laiq.exe dll.exe OfficeGui###.exe] Virus scanner didn't detect anything but I think they were the reason why webpage/http access was prohibited as well and .Net services like MSN etc. (even though yahoo etc worked fine).

Needless to say the system runs somewhat slower than first but it runs fine now. I shall try re-installing MSN 6.2 besides 7 Beta if it will allow that and then install WCG agent and see if it will show that dialog where it wants/wanted to overwrite some MSN files again. I hope I don't spend too much time on this the second time through.

Thanks for all the help I got here, cheers.

Borg1,

While you're downloading beta software from Microsoft, you should check out their beta version Anti-Spyware. I've used it and it has found spyware on my computer that other free programs did not. Perhaps some spyware was piggybacking on the install of WCG to modify files on your computer. Getting rid of spyware sometimes helps things run faster too.

Re: WCG client fouls up MSN 6.x and Windows Messenger

Hi all, thanks so much for your assistance with running the WCG client. I just wanted to let you know I formally switched to the United Devices (UD Agent client) which includes the Proteome protien folding client which is so far the only specialty of the WCG.

What I like about the UD Agent is the fact that it includes multiple projects on top of proteome, and the member profile allows the changing and selecting of which projects the user wants to run. They claim to have finished a few other projects with the help of the UD Agent and grid computing in general, awesome work.

I just wish I was able to transfer my WCG stats (Borg1) to my new UD Agent member name (Borg2).

nelsoc, I will try your suggestion about the Anti-Spyware tool mentioned.

Thanks all !
