Networking sites like Hi5 and bebo have much easier options when you want to tell your friends about the site.
They ask us to just enter the yahoo or hotmail or google email id and password, and those sites automatically sends everyone in our 'contacts' list an invite. Why cant WCG do something like that? That way many more people will come to know, instead of this cutting and pasting everyone's email, its a real pain. Most people dont have time for that. Any tech or guys working in WCG would like to answer? |

Why? Because World Community Grid have ethics.
That's simply a form of spamming, and just one reason why such "networking" sites have a bad reputation. It also violates the terms of use for your yahoo/hotmail/google account, and as such is illegal. So no, World Community Grid won't ever be doing this. The personal touch is better. Invite your friends personally, and help them to join. |

Its not a form of spamming, after you enter your password and email, then you can uncheck any boxes that u dont want people to get the invite. Networking sites dont have a bad reputation, if they do then people wont use them in the millions. Moreover its not illegal, because those sites have an agreement with yahoo, hotmail and google and its all legal. It amazes me that people so ignorant as you are should even reply. If you dont know anything about this subject, why dont u keep quiet? WCG has a mere 400,00 max people and networking sites have in the millions. There is nothing unethical is doing the way bebo and them have done to invite friends. |

We're all ignorant here, then.
----------------------------------------Bad grammar used similarly in an invitation like that would not encourage me to join, either.

geoffrey_philip,
The reasoning for not putting the sort of functionality you describe on World Community Grid is because the process for joining World Community Grid is more complicated and involved than joining yet another social network. To join MySpace or Bebo or Hi5, you just have to fill in an email address and password and you're good to go. For World Community Grid, there is a software download required, so the barrier to entry is raised significantly. |

retsof,
My bad grammar doesnt matter because there's an already prepared list of sentences that will be sent to my friend's email as the invitation. I dont need to write anything myself for the invitation. All i have to do is click click. |

Nelsoc i understand what you mean. But what i'm saying is that once the invitation is sent to the person, then they can be directed to WCG website where it clearly tells the person what WCG is about and that they should install a software if they want to crunch. Its a matter of inviting them first and then explaining how WCG works. Convenience is the word. |

Networking sites dont have a bad reputation, if they do then people wont use them in the millions. The first part of that sentence is just plain untrue. Put "hi5" and "spam" into google and read some of the 638,000 matches. As for the second part, having a bad reputation and having lots of users is not mutually exclusive. Some sites have large numbers of users as well as large numbers of people who hate them. There are ways of spreading the word without even sending an email at all. Join one of the WCG groups on Facebook and your friends will all see it without having to be burdened with extra email. |
