Can some body explain this grid please

I'm new to this. So I have questions about how this grid works. Are there system requirements? Can viruses be spread via this system?
If you computer is being used on the grid at a given time,do you have to wait until computations are completed before you can resume use?

Re: Can some body explain this grid please

In the Help section of the website you will find answers to most questions you may have.

System requirements are very low and most WCG projects run under Windows, Linux and Mac machines. You will find details for each project via the page above.

Security is a key topic in WCG (which is sponsored and operated by IBM). So if you ever get a virus in your machine it will not have come from WCG.

Under the default settings science applications run in your machine in parallel with your normal activity, using only the cycles of your processor that you do not use. They run with the lowest priority, therefore when you need all the power of your processor the science application does nothing and it resumes as soon as you need less power. All this is transparent to the user, i.e. you never need to ask yourself if/when you will be given enough power for your job, that works the opposite way.

The only thing which might slow down your machine and your work is if the memory (RAM) requirements are not met. In that case things will still work but the lack of RAM will cause excessive swapping to disk which will slow all tasks in your machine (yours and WCG's).

Cheers. Jean.

Hi hedon, welcome on board.
I suggest that you spend time reading the Start Here forum:

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/listthreads?forum=3

There are a a lot of explanation there.

Other forum are more specialized, and there are many to choose a way to learn a little bit more.

The initial page of World Community Grid (WCG) have a plenty of information about how it works including for each project (requirements for instance).

good luck Regards. Giba. coffee
