Please Help! NRW Ver6.15

I feel this project is suffering slightly from a ...misguided.. roll out. As such, I'm trying to help it by running only this project for a while. The problem is that I can't get a work unit to run for more than about five minutes!

Every unit I get 'finishes' after a few minutes and then shows up on this site as an error - "could not open file best1.pdb"

I've just nursed a unit and grabbed as much data as I could.

What else? Running WinXP Pro on a PentD Extreme (3.73GHz) with 2Gb RAM. All other WCG projects have run fine, as do the multitude of other Boinc projects I am running/have run.

Can anyone suggest a fix or do I just give up on this one?

Re: Please Help! NRW Ver6.15

hmmm, SP3 I suppose?

See 5.10.28 so recommend at least upgrade to 5.10.45
Result Log

<core_client_version>5.10.28</core_client_version>

Now run probably many tens of 6.15 on XPSP3 with Comodo AV and BoClean.

A wiki reports an out of date OpenGL video device driver:

Re: Please Help! NRW Ver6.15

After a bit of hunting I can tell you that it reports as SP2 - but then it does downloads when I'm not looking, so it may have got all the components of SP3...

An interesting page; but it seems dependant on use of the graphics to initiate this problem. I haven't got as far attempting the graphics yet (Boinc runs as a service.)

What about the line "[ERROR] Failed to create checkpoint filename."

If auto update has downloaded sp3 it will go through a normal (any kinda app) install routine - so u will know if it's installed as u'll have clicked nxt.

Re: Please Help! NRW Ver6.15

Hello MacDitch,
If NRW cannot create a check point file that stores the best structures, it cannot return any results. Avoid this project until we discover why your system will not let you create a file. Ordinarily I think of security programs when a computer refuses to create a file.

Re: Please Help! NRW Ver6.15

Apparently my machine grabbed another unit before I suspended the project - so I watched it as it ran. :)

At 2m22s progress went to 0.495%
At 4m46s progress went to 0.992%
At 7m11s progress went to 100.0%

I also grabbed a copy of the WCG folder before it uploaded anything in case there is something in there that will help.

For what it's worth, I went through McAfee to see if there was anything in there but couldn't see any problems.

Dont know if you upgraded to BOINC 5.10.45 and also if you specifically had your video card drivers updated to their latest, not those of MS

An experiment to see if we can postpone the problem and proof something:

  • Open Advanced Menu > Preferences > Disk and Memory Usage > Write to Disk At Most Every... set this to 999 seconds. Let a NRW job run and see if it can get to 17 minutes.

  • Go to File Explorer and BOINC, right click and explicitly set ownership to the user that is running BOINC and for those permissions to proliferate to any files and directories below.

  • McAfee is a usual suspect. Exclude BOINC program/file structure from the scanning area. Normally you'd expect a false positive alert, but maybe it does not. The pdb file extension may be something special to it or the OS?

After, don't know but to call on a idea

    Done & done.

  • Don't seem to be able to do either of these! I'm running as administrator so the first shouldn't be an issue... McAfee seems to have an option to scan only programs or everything - but no way to exclude indivdual (sets of) files. confused

Has it actually delayed the failure to more than 16 minutes as expected?

And in your machine is it scanning only programs or all files?

    Cheers. Jean.

    Nope, ~7minutes. confused
And in your machine is it scanning only programs or all files?
All files, but more importantly taking no action without command. There has been no message asking me to take action and scanning the activity/incident logs shows absolutely nothing that could be affecting it.

I'm going to try running a couple of units on a different machine (early next week) just out of interest, but it looks like it may be easier to just give this one a pass. sad
