one client/device profil does not what I tell him....

Hi, I installed BOINC on two machines. I decided to do this with two different devices, one for my laptop and one for my old M$ System.

I told the profile for my macbook (laptop) to load work for five days. It always worked. I switched back to a normal load of 0.3 days ( I think that was the value before.)

I tried this for my other profile fopr my old PC - and it never ever loaded more then one work unit in reserve, regardless what I told the device to load. there is always one work unit in reserve.

why ?

running rice only on both machines/profiles.

any suggestions ? both machines have more then enough HDD space left and free in the profile etc.

Re: one client/device profil does not what I tell him....

It's not that simple. BOINC computes how much it can buffer based on recent crunching history. If e.g. you had a few days where only 4 hours were allowed for computing it will include that in the queue size estimate. It also remembers effective progress, so even if your computer was on 4 hours, but only 50% of the cycles could be used, it's also included in the equation. Resetting WCG in the projects tab and clearing the local preferences (advanced menu > Preferences > Clear button) will set most variables back to 1.000000 or default.

If your computer is always on-line, BOINC will at most times ensure the next job is ready to run before the current is finished. Let it run and it will adjust slowly, which can take a week and longer.

trevorcolby00, what version of BOINC do you have? The additional work buffer is a new feature, and if you have an old client, it won't work.

thank you all for replying :)

My version on my Windows PC is from 21/04/2008 ( that is the date I decided to contribute again to WCG). I have Version 5.10.45 here installed on this PC.

Is that the newest one ?

I thought that the BOINC client updates himself, right ? ( I really dont know )

I will try to do what Sekerob suggested and see if its works.

Re: one client/device profil does not what I tell him....

OK, still only 2 WU = 16 hours here, terminated the work in progress didnt helped at all :(

16 hours arent five days....

I cannot let my internet open for 5 days because this "§$%$§$%§$ Apple Airport Extreme Station is too stupid to re-open the connection if it has been disbanded here by my local ISP. According to apple it should but even my 6 years old cable only router from Netgear work better than this crap from apple.

I am on vacation tomorrow for 5 days - I planned to let crunch my machines 24h a day butopnder this circumstances it is useless because after 24 days, my ISP dicoes me and this router doesnt re-connect. I hoped to solve this with a work-load of 5 days - but this didnt worked out either - I turn those darn stuff off now for the next 6 days.

Pech gehabt WCG. devilish

Hello trevorcolby00,
My first guess is that your Messages tab shows 'reading local preferences' which overrides the website preferences. If so, your local preferences might have a buffer of only 0.3 days. You can check this in Advanced - Preferences on BOINC Manager.

Re: one client/device profil does not what I tell him....

Hi Trevor,

glad it is fixed, but had you followed what I suggested in my earlier post "and clearing the local preferences (advanced menu > Preferences > Clear button) " no pouting of the lower lip and a sulking "Pech gehabt WCG. " would have come up. Won't say 99 out of 100, but usually it's the local prefs stopping the website settings to take effect. There's even an FAQ for this.

Nächsten mal versuchen wir es auf Deutsch für bessere Übermittelung ;>)

Guten Urlaub

No, you must download new versions manually, but it is not difficult. Automatic update may not be desireable since there is no single version that is recommended for all projects. 5.10.45 is the version tested and recommended by WCG, but you can find many others at the BOINC website.
