biggrin Is ther a "hidden" BOINC Installation possible???

Ok...

today I send a mail to my Boss in company with the link for the world community grid with a little explanation and ask if maybe we can installed it in company...

...on about 650+x Desktop Pcs.... biggrin

Well...not the fastest one, I think normal Pentiums 4 at about 1.8 GHZ...

but 650 work units... this will be amazing!

He mail some questions to me, maybe you can help me out...

1. raise in electric bill when 650 CPUs run 8 hours at full throttle???

Any idea? Im afraid it will be significant...100 Wattsx650xhours oh oh!

2. Is there a hidden Installation so Desktop users can not play with it???

Ist possible?

3. Raise in internet traffic when 650 Units download/upload?

Ideas?

4. Will the air condition use more energy when 650 Units run 100%?

Im afraid...yes...

I really hope I can make him add our Desktops to WCG!!!

Wish me luck!

Andreas

Appending answers to your questions, not entering into detail.as that's only useful when the time is there to roll it out:

Answer: If the intend is to only run it when the machine is on for work, it's rather marginal. The PC is on anyway thus utilizing just the unused cycles.

2. Is there a hidden Installation so Desktop users can not play with it???

Ist possible?

Answer: Yes with lock down against any tampering.

3. Raise in internet traffic when 650 Units download/upload?

Ideas?

Answer: varies as to what project. Rice and FightAids are very very small and good for 8 hours per run, so count on maybe roughly 20-30mb combined ul/dl traffic per month per machine at office hours only.

e.g. RICE: 23 workdays x 8 hours = 23 results at 400kb download, 400kb upload for 8 hours crunching = about 20mb for NRW and half for FAAH.

4. Will the air condition use more energy when 650 Units run 100%?

Im afraid...yes...

Answer: Think of it this way: In summer a little more cooling, in winter a little less heating.

I really hope I can make him add our Desktops to WCG!!!

BOINC 5.10.45 has a power saving profile that allows for the client to go to sleep after 20 minutes of no use (default). This means that if the user walks away, the computer Standby or Hibernation modes can automatically kick in.

Large accounts can make use of the WCG partner program if interested, which provides help with mass roll-out e.g.

Andreas, World Community Grid can give you individual assistance deploying to that many computers.

Take a look at the partner program: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewBecomePartner.do

Re: Is ther a "hidden" BOINC Installation possible???

Can I send you a PM when I get "green lights" for assisting a little in Installation (can use netinstaller?) and Setup?

I will only bother you if I be sure we can run it... ;)

EDIT: UPS, we post both at the same moment, I will have a look :)

Thanks guys!

Re: Is ther a "hidden" BOINC Installation possible???

Andreas,

You can post here anytime you like or mail support@worldcommunitygrid.org for personalised assistance.

The most well known reference document for deployment over network is by The Lazy Slug . WCG has also compiled a document for these purposes which too refers to TLS's website (if only I knew where the link is readily referenced).

Here a few words by WCG on the energy topic: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=deploy
