Re: Allowing Members to Opt-Out of Automatic Opt-In for New Projects

Nope. I'd be fine if the default is opt in. It's ability to turn it off if you don't want to do it...

The default should certainly be opt-in; a vast number of crunchers download-and-forget...never visit this website or these fora...and new projects would not receive sufficient resources.

The default should certainly be opt-out; a vast number of crunchers download-and-forget...never visit this website or these fora... and new projects would receive support from users that do not wish to give their support. Taking without consent = stealing.

I'm glad it is not up to me to make the decision what to do ;)

Of course people are going to yell at you for whatever you set the default value to.

Re: Allowing Members to Opt-Out of Automatic Opt-In for New Projects

My My Projects on My Grid states "All Projects", as such the decision for setting a future new box for those that consciously changed that box back to 'all projects' is not difficult. My interpretation is that those members chose for the 'I want to contribute idle cycles of my computer for anything humanitarian WCG puts out into the grid." concept of what WCG is about.

Next up will be either DDDT phase 2 (xxx'08?) & HCMD phase 2 (oct'08?). Those that contributed to those projects on phase 1, through the end, are possible candidates to be auto-enrolled.

At any rate, WCG will be very careful how to implement and what auto-population of that option will be. We'll see.

Re: Allowing Members to Opt-Out of Automatic Opt-In for New Projects

I did and do see your point.

As a suggestion that just might accommodate both your, my, and some other peoples opinion, the following might be a solution:

At this moment, when I select every single project here at WCG right now, then the "all projects" is automatically selected. If this were not the case, then any user could choose to support every currently active project without being automatically enlisted to support future projects. This user could then eventually select "all projects" as obvious choice to support every current and future project.

At the same time, if this user chooses only a couple of projects, and chooses to select the boinc-box where one says that other projects may send work if no other work is available then I think WCG has the best possible workaround about some discussions I saw here on the forum.

At this moment I have unselected 1 project just to avoid supporting future projects that I do not like.

My 2 Eurocents, with all due respect for WCG.

Re: Allowing Members to Opt-Out of Automatic Opt-In for New Projects

The setting for the automatic opt-in for new projects will be set for members as follows:

For each BOINC device profile for existing members:

If all projects or all projects except AfricanClimate@Home are selected, then the option to be automatically opted-in to new projects will be set to true.

Otherwise it will be set to false.

For new members it will be set to true.

For AfricanClimate@home selected (which could include any other projects), set to false?

The way I read it is if not all projects are selected i.e. some including AC@H you wont be auto-opted in. It applying on a 'per profile' basis.

Re: Allowing Members to Opt-Out of Automatic Opt-In for New Projects

If on a device profile, the list of selected projects is equal to one of the following two sets, then the opt-in setting will be set to true:

{AfricanClimate@Home, Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together ,FightAIDS@Home, Help Conquer Cancer, Human Proteome Folding 2, Nutritious Rice for the World}

{Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together ,FightAIDS@Home, Help Conquer Cancer, Human Proteome Folding 2, Nutritious Rice for the World}

Otherwise we will assume that the user has chosen to just run some specific projects they have selected and thus will set the option to false.
