Have to uninstall BOINC

Since I upgraded to the BOINC platform I have noticed that my PC running slower and discovered that a process wcg_faah_autodock . . . . is running in the background and utilizing the processor more than 80% of the time although it is configured as a Low priority process it seems to be running all the time

thx John

Re: Have to uninstall BOINC

It seems you have a misapprehension about what "low priority" means. It simply means that the World Community Grid process is considered last. If all the other processes on your computer are using 20% of your CPU, then WCG will get 80%. If the other processes are using 100%, then WCG will get nothing.

So, everything is normal, and you should have nothing to worry about.

Re: Have to uninstall BOINC

If you have a laptop, there are some throttling methods to deal with the heat.

Desktops don't mind running at 100% all of the time due to better air flow. The whole point here is take the extra percentage that would normally be taken by the idling process.

Low priority means that if your computer wants to do something else, BOINC will take less percentage or stop, and then resume when the higher priority task has finished.

What do you mean "running slower"? Does the 20% task have some kind of problem? If you are video editing or playing intenive games, then BOINC should be stopped or snoozed for the duration.

Re: Have to uninstall BOINC

Hi ejwjohn,
Slower? The WCG background process is only supposed to run in place of the Idle process on your computer. This should not slow down anything. (This is what 'lowest' priority means.) But it does take up memory space. The first thing to consider is if you might be running more than 1 thread. By default, BOINC will run 1 thread per core. If you have a Pentium 4 CPU, hyperthreading will fool BOINC into running 2 threads unless you specify differently in Preferences.

Could you describe your system to us and discuss how it seems slower?

An easy way to check is to 'Exit' the BOINC icon to see how fast your computer runs without the WCG application program. Then you can restart it with a reboot.
