Losing Work

I was running BOINC and I got it up to 7.2% and I turned off my computer. Then, when I turned my computer on the next day, I lost progress and it went down to 6.something%. What happened?

Re: Losing Work

Hello there Mr. Met smile

What happened was when you shut off your pc for the night, your work unit was between checkpoints. So when you rebooted and the work unit started again, it started from the last known checkpoint.

Perfectly normal behavior.

Ciao

Re: Losing Work

Now I didn't even shut down my computer, I started at 7.8%, it went up to 9.2%, and back down to 7.8% Can I just cancel and switch to a different project?

Re: Losing Work

Hello Mr. Met,
Yes, you can select as many projects as you want. To Abort a work unit, open BOINC Manager, select the Tasks Tab (in the Advanced view) and select the work unit, then click on Abort.

Are you aware that the progress indicator will naturally go up and down by small amounts? Many of our projects use non-deterministic algorithms, which means that the program will choose a vector and start moving that way but if it suddenly discovers that it is moving in an illegal way (a blind alley) it will back up (reducing the progress indicator) and try on a different vector.

Re: Losing Work

Thanks, I see what you are saying, how many days does it normally take to finish a set?

Re: Losing Work

Hello Mr. Met,

For which project? Here is a graphic image about the projects that Sekerob maintains in Start Here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17855

If you look at Statistics by Project ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProjects.do ) you will see that the work units are sized to finish in 8 hours for the average system. For FAAH ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=faah ) the historical average is almost 10 hours. With a calculator, you can look at yesterday's results and compute the average recent length for any project.

Re: Losing Work

I switched to rice and I think I finished. When it finishes does it automatically retrieve new work and restart from 0. It was at 99.4% when I left my computer, when I came back it was 0% and only 2 minutes in.

Re: Losing Work

Hello Mr. Met,
That sounds good. Yes, it returns results as soon as they are finished (and marks the completed work unit as 'Ready to report' in the Tasks tab). You can see everything that has been returned for several days in 'My Grid' - 'Results Status'. This web page is explained in the 'Start Here' forum.
