I get a most frustrating clicking noise when the rice project is running but only on my ASUS Notebook running XP. It is not from the speakers as they are muted, it is not the HDD and not the fan. It may be the keyboard PC speaker but is not the same as keyboard click. It is quieter than keyboard cclick but clickes 3 or 4 times a second regard while the project is in compute mode. I don't get it on any of the other projects. My desktop does not have the problem and runs same OS and client.
Any ideas other than turning rice project off? |

You say not HDD, but I'll try to eliminate it.
----------------------------------------I can't think of anything else at 3-4 per second. It could be the disk drive head moving around. The platters spin so fast that you wouldn't be hearing that. If it's rather constant and noisy, it could be struggling. See whether the frequency of the noise matches the light for disk accesses, if you have one. If you have a LOT of disk hits, it could be to/from virtual memory (windows swap file). BOINC still needs disk access, but not all of them. A dual core system here running two BOINC workunits is blinking about every second or so. This machine is rather quiet, but I used to have an older machine with noisy disk accesses.

No it is definitely not the HDD. There is a light for HDD and when there is no work other than BOINC client running the hdd only flickers ocassionally.
The noise only comes when the screen saver graphic for the rice project is displayed. It clicks at one frequency while computing for 2 seconds while the "next structure" % indicator moves up and then when the % pauses it clicks at a different frequency, then reverts to the first state again while the % indicator starts moving up again. The noise does not go away if I close the notebook screen. The rice project is the only time I ever get a noise like this one. The noise is not there while the BOINC client is running and the screen saver has not yet clicked in. |

I've read about some ageing components on the motherboard that could develop noises.... capacitors e.g. If only with Rice, it might be syncing with some routine, but can assure you that this is not going to be remedied by changing the program.... a laptop doctor is the route to follow.

Let's turn off the screen saver in Windows. If it's graphics related, maybe we can get rid of it that way. With the screen saver off, I have a few more % for the crunching anyway.
----------------------------------------With screen saver =(none) it is still possible to select graphics in BOINC, since WCG has graphics for all projects. Does the noise only happen when you are looking at the graphics box? If the graphics box is closed, does the noise still happen? The only thing I notice myself is that the cursor blinks when I position it anywhere in the box, like on top of the rice field. I'm also using the animated windows cursor arrow so I can see computer activity. It's sporadic, somewhat related to the structure generation, more blinking than the HDD, but not solid blinking. I wonder whether the noise is at THIS frequency. I have no extra sounds, even at full speaker volume. Power supply transformer buzz would be at 60 Hertz. (My wife's computer has some, and it is also constant.)

Thaks for the suggestions.
The noise goes away with screen saver turned off and BOINC client is running. It also does not come on when any other screen saver is used and BOINC client is running (including some graphic intensive screen savers). With no screen saver and BOINC main on display there is no noise for simple or advanced menu. But if I click on the graphics and get the rice picture with the two compute bars and the revoling model inside a window the noise comes back again just as before. The noise is higher frequency that HDD and 3 to 4 times louder and alternates between the two states as I described before depending on segment status. I have never had it with anything else either witth WCG projects or business simulations / graphics I run. I can turn a different screen saver on so that solves my problem even though it doesn't explain it. Thanks for your suggestion. |

It's some graphics element or a graphics card...seems to be sensitive to regeneration frequency or something.
----------------------------------------There's just something freaky about this particular project. The high rate of regeneration of the red lines in the graphics box at the right might also have something to do with it. Lots of stops and starts, whereas graphics on the other projects are a simple slow rotation at most. I run without a screensaver all of the time anyway to give more % to the actual crunching. (none). I can always look at the graphics box now and then to see what's going on. I hope that this goes at least partially toward letting you sleep when you want. ![]()

My graphics card always makes a sound in 3D mode for 1-4 minutes then goes silent. It has done this since purchase 5 months ago.
I would talk to your vid. card manufacturers tech support to see what they say. ~BoB |

You may hum when you feel happy. Your lappy loves to crunch for rice, hence the sound. you should be proud.
