cc_config.xml help [resolved]

Oops blushing

I tried to copy:

- <cc_config>
- <log_flags>
<task>1</task>
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
<proxy_debug>0</proxy_debug>
<http_debug>0</http_debug>
<checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug>
</log_flags>
- <options>
<save_stats_days>90</save_stats_days>
<dont_contact_ref_site>0</dont_contact_ref_site>
</options>
</cc_config>

into my new quad and then when I went to save it I was asked did I want to overwrite the file because it already existed. I hit yes, and then went and told BOINC to read config file and I got an error about a missing start tag. Could someone help me fix what I done did break?

Re: cc_config.xml help

Sekerob,

You might note that the screen from BoincView 1.4.2 that is shown in
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11332#88351 can be accessed only from the "Open BOINC core client configuration" toolbar button... i.e. there's no way to access it through BoincView's File/Options/Tools/Info menu.

I searched here and http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com but didn't find anything specific for Linux so assumed one can create the cc_config.xml file in whatever folder BOINC (6.2.15) was installed.

I learned from working on PLCs to be wary of buttons labeled like Load/Load from file (especially when there's no tooltip/context help), ergo instead of using BoincView for that I just copied cc_config.xml across the LAN from a windows machine... when I stopped and restarted BOINC the linux version threw the messages

Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <client_version_check_url>
Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <client_download_url>
Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <network_test_url>

No biggie - I'll just edit them out (though they don't appear to hurt anything)... but, for what it's worth, why wasn't the linux version customized to use those URLs, too?

And is the Mac version also not customized to make use of those taqs?

Thanks.

Re: cc_config.xml help

hmmm, not sure and it's strange for the official wiki says it's implemented in the none WCG customized version from 6.3.15

<client_download_url>
The URL to tell user to visit to download new client. Default is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php. Image:list-add.pngNew in 6.3.15
<client_version_check_url>
The URL to go to for XML list of client version. Default is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php?xml=1. Image:list-add.pngNew in 6.3.15
<network_test_url>
The URL to use when checking network connectivity; default is http://www.google.com/. Image:list-add.pngNew in 6.3.15

Except for a custom windows version, there's never been a WCGized Mac or Linux release, links to the standard packages provided. Think Linux is better served by using the Package Managers version? Who knows with 6.10 will the be WCG kits, with skin (which you can copy over from the Windows version I suppose.

I'll update the FAQ, thanks for advising.

Re: cc_config.xml help

Sek and Zoso,
The version for Linux offered on WCG's website is 6.2.15, and in Synaptic, the package manager, it is still 6.2.18. So it is normal that those three cc_config parameters are not recognized by these versions.

Zoso, they are simply not recognized, have no effect, and they are listed only once when the cc_config file is read. Personally I would not even edit them out if they were already there: that way when Synaptic will distribute a more recent version your cc_config will be ready to ignore Berkeley's red warnings. smile

Re: cc_config.xml help

Per announcement, no qualifier for platform: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,22403

Still it remains hmmm, for it was implemented in 6.2.28 but the 6.2 at Berkeley, as commented by others, was never aligned to include these and other enhancements between 6.2.15 and 6.2.28.

Still it remains hmmm, for it was implemented in 6.2.28 but the 6.2 at Berkeley, as commented by others, was never aligned to include these and other enhancements between 6.2.15 and 6.2.28.

All new code is added to the "trunk", and later it can, but doesn't need to be, added-back to the various release-branches like v6.2.xx, v6.4.xx, v6.6.xx and so on. Also, each individual build shows-up under "tags".

By looking on the dates, the last "tag" was v6.3.14 at 9. October, while the relevant code was added 14. October, and v6.3.15 is dated 20. October. It also included in the v6.2.23-WCG-version, but since none of the v6.2.2x-versions got released outside WCG, the version most users would 1st. see this in is v6.3.15.

As for not including this functionality in the general v6.2.xx-branch, the normal policy is that after a release-branch has been splitt-off from the trunk, no new features but only bug-fixes should be included. Connecting other locations would go under the heading of "new features", so isn't included.

Not to forget, v6.2.28 is dated 17. November 2008, and the v6.4.x release-branch is also dated this date. Since excepted a release v6.4.x-release "soon", there wasn't really any reason to backport any of the WCG-functionality to the v6.2.xx-branch, since it's included in the v6.4.x-branch anyway.

10-4.

Thanks to all for your replies and info.
I'll let this slide back down the list now, since it already said 'resolved' when I started adding to it.
