Re: This project is perfect for older computers

Thanks.

I went looking to see about creating a new profile, I am sorry, I cannot find what I need to do that. If you could give me more specific instructions, I would appreciate it very much.

Also, if I do create a new profile, will I still be able to tie it in with my current CPID?

I mean, you know, if creating a new profile just means attaching with a new user ID, email address, and password, sure, I can do that, but that will remove those processes from my current CPID.

Maybe you will say that I cannot have my cake and eat it too, and I will certainly understand.

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

Hello mitrichr!
Talking of real profiles (and not of new member names as you do) are you already using the four profiles available for Boinc devices, i.e. default, home, work and school? If you forget about their names you can define four completely different crunching profiles (including which project they will receive, by selecting custom if the list of projects is not visible from the start) under your current member name and affect them to particular machines depending on their crunching ability.

Currently I am using three profiles depending on which machine/system I am using (although I am no longer going to work and even less to school smile ).

Or have I missed something in your previous posts?

Cheers. Jean.

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

Thanks, to all, I have now changed the profiles on the two PIII's.

On one, I did a new profile, with just Rice.

On the other, I went into the current profile and just unchecked HCC.

All of my machines have the box checked to ship me something if my chosen project(s) is out of work.

So, did I do O.K.? Will the one where I just unchecked HCC work just for Rice?

Any corrective criticism will ge gladly heeded.

If the PIII where you simply unchecked HCC was running all projects it will run Rice and other projects as well, except HCC.

If you want only the Rice project in both PIIIs (that would be my personal choice) you might save one profile for other use (we cannot have more than four for Boinc right now).

Personally this is what I do (but this is a personal choice, not what everybody should forcibly do):
- I use profiles on the web site only for setting the projects I want to run on different machines/devices (can be different sets of machines for people with many machines)
- I use Advanced->Preferences from the Advanced view for setting all other operational parameters for each machine.

That makes it easy for managing projects, and that avoids my wondering on which side (host or local) I have set one particular operational parameter.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

Not only is this project good for old computers, it is the only project that will run on my newest computer. All the other projects cause it to crash. confused

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

It is good that there is at least this project working in your new computer, but it is not normal that the other projects do not work.

You should give us more details about your setup in a new thread in the Boinc Agent Support forum. Start your new post by stating again what you said here and add Boinc messages from the start down to the first "Starting task..." message (use copy from the Messages tab of the Advanced view).

Cheers. Jean.

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

I'm running Rice on an "old" Compaq Armada 1700 laptop 24x7 at a blazing 233mhz. I believe this is an old Intel PII processor. Works fine. It's over in the corner averaging about 9 points a work unit. Can only put 756MB of memory on it so what else am I going to use it for? It used to run dddt only until the new project started.

CORRECTION: 156MB of memory!!!

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

Wow.

It's great to hear it works, but I have to raise the cost issue again. If you left this computer off for a year, you would probably save enough in electricity to buy a new computer. That computer would equal in a single day the work you could have done in the previous year with the old computer.

Obviously, the precise economics will depend on your electricity bill and the cost of a new computer. I will leave the final decision with you.

Re: This project is perfect for older computers

Goodness Gracious of you to leave the final decision to the device owner Didactylos shock

The trac wiki shows 233 as minimum and 500 mhz recommended floor to at all have BOINC on it: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/SystemRequirements

Does not say who the page creator was at the time wink
