Hello,
----------------------------------------we have some questions about this promising project: 1.- Is Nutritious Rice for the World a non-for-profit project? 2.- Will be the results available in the public domain? Thanks in advance. Happy crunching!! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 13, 2008 6:29:11 AM] |

Hi Scribe,
thx for reply. I knew that link but I think that info has to be visible in the project website also due to the importance it has. And in this case, that info is missing. Is for that I have to question. Thanks again mate, and happy crunching! |

1.- Is Nutritious Rice for the World a non-for-profit project? 2.- Will be the results available in the public domain? As for every project accepted by WCG, 1. yes 2. yes. Cheers. Jean. |

Hello Alfonso,
----------------------------------------As mentioned above, all World Community Grid research project results are to be placed in a public database. The database for Nutritious Rice for the World is discussed on the About the Project page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/rice/viewRiceAbout.do Protinfo & World Community Grid Protinfo is being used to create three-dimensional models of the tens of thousands of rice proteins. These models are then used to predict the function of each protein and to understand the role of the gene that encodes it. The models, and any analysis resulting from examining them, will be housed at the Bioverse database and webserver, which is a comprehensive framework to relate molecules such as proteins and DNA to an organism's pathways and systems. Thank you very much for participating! Tedi [Edit 1 times, last edit by TKH at May 13, 2008 12:08:11 PM] |

This sounds like a genetically modified organism (GMO) project. From a National Geographic Magazine article, I've read about "golden rice" which is a product of GMO. Not supporting this project so I unchecked it. Strange though, I never selected it in the first place.

Not supporting this project so I unchecked it. Strange though, I never selected it in the first place. 1. this is not GMO, unless you consider cross-breeding to be genetic engineering. 2. i love GMO and i support it all the way. 3. i favor automatically 'opting in' to new projects so i don't have to babysit computers. this is the way it has been. But it's not. Didn't you read the description? Please read the project description. The scientists and admins go to a lot of trouble to make it interesting, accessible and informative.
Reading it should not only answer your questions, but allay your fears. Read it: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/rice/viewRiceMain.do |

Hi keiko01,
----------------------------------------This project is trying to gain information in order to understand what proteins are produced by rice and aid in understanding how they interact. If I really wanted to scare you, I would tell you that it is studying chemicals. A clear explanation given in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/rice/viewRiceMain.do Lawrence [Edit 2 times, last edit by TKH at May 14, 2008 2:12:49 PM] |

This post by the lead project scientist restates this:
----------------------------------------http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost?post=165555 Re: Welcome to the Nutritious Rice for the World project! Is this genetically engineering new rice strains? No this project is not about genetic engineering - which is done in the laboratory and exchanges genes from different species. This research examines the structure of the proteins that make up rice at a level of detail that has not been possible before. Once we know the structure, we can identify the function and thus identify the plants to select for cross-breeding. Cross breeding is a technique that farmers have used since the human race began to cultivate crops rather than just collect whatever grew around them.
