Thanks DM. I was following that particular thread and posted my query in this one by mistake. Duh! Hopefully a tech will stumble upon this and offer a heads up before the WU's actually start processing. |

I'm relatively new here but it just seems WRONG to automatically opt people in to new projects. Shouldn't WE decide which projects we want to donate our resources too?? You do get to decide. But using "opt-in" on all projects isn't practical. Projects end, and if WCG used that method, then eventually everybody would be signed up for no projects. The majority of members are happy to run any project that World Community Grid have approved to run on the grid - WCG have very high standards for projects, and they all have humanitarian aims. Opting out is easy if you aren't interested in a project, or if you want to concentrate on a single WCG project. There has been much discussion in the past about the way to opt people in and out. Ultimately, this way seems to work best. In the future, it is possible (and hoped) that WCG will provide more fine-grained controls, that let you say something like "I want to work exclusively on this project until it ends". But that's in the future still. I am running 3 machines in my little house, two of which are on for the sole purpose of running one project that I care about. I almost never look at those two machines. I turn the monitors on only once or twice a week. So I wouldn't waste cpu cycles if no wu's were available, I reluctantly added a second project. You added a third with no warning to me, "diluting" the effort I am trying to make. The logic of "everybody would be signed up for no projects" is preposterous. You have my email address. If there is a change and you want to end a project or start a new one, you should just ask! I signed up to do work I care about, not to have my computers turned into zombies. WCG have very high standards for projects, and they all have humanitarian aims. I'm sure that you do. But let me be the judge of what runs on my machines. |

i am in favor of automatically opting "in" to new projects. i also think that is what most crunchers favor.

Gort, I see that all of your 5 posts have been to complain about this issue.
While your complaint has some validity, I hope you understand that World Community Grid can't satisfy everyone. So, don't expect the current policy to change any time soon. And I think the slowness of the transition to BOINC is proof that the "you have my email address" idea won't work. Yes, WCG have your email address. And if you opted to receive newsletters, you will get a new project announcement shortly after the launch, giving you an opportunity to opt out. May I also take this opportunity to remind you of the alternate work option: "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project". Use this instead of picking a backup project. |

Gort, I see that all of your 5 posts have been to complain about this issue. I guess that puts me in the "complainers" category as well then since all 2 (counting this one!) of my posts have been to complain about this issue as well. May I also take this opportunity to remind you of the alternate work option: "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project". Use this instead of picking a backup project. Hmm. May I take this opportunity to quote your previous reply? But using "opt-in" on all projects isn't practical. Projects end, and if WCG used that method, then eventually everybody would be signed up for no projects. It sounds like the "alternate work option" is a viable method of keeping people from not working on any projects when their desired projects (that they opted-in for) have finished! Like Gort stated, my first inclination after seeing I had been opted-in to a new project that I did not choose, and which was diluting the progress toward the project I have specifically chosen to contribute to, was to drop out entirely. Please reconsider and do not use an automatic opt-in for future new projects!!! |

JethroF, it isn't my decision. However, since your view seems to be in a minority, I don't expect the policy to change.
Here's another interesting fact that relates to this: your project preferences don't actually affect the progress of any of the projects. World Community Grid balance the projects so that they all get a predetermined share. Sometimes a project is slowed down for technical reasons, at other times a project might be sped up in order to finish quickly. In short, so long as you contribute, you are helping your favourite project - no matter which project your computer is actually working on. |

Jethro,
----------------------------------------There is no dilution of a project. WCG controls how many work units of each project get sent out. So, if you and 1,000 of your friends all selected Cancer, and only Cancer, the then there would be less Cancer work units sent to other machines. The over all amount of work per day alocated to Cancer remains the same. If you and your 1,000 friend then decided to switch to FAAH, there would be no effect, at all on the daily number of Cancer work units sent out. The work would just shift to different machines. I used to crunch just Cancer projects for personal reasons, but once I learned how work was doled out, I turned everything on. Edit: Didactylos beat me to it. I need a typing tutor.
