Hi,
I feel the number of devices is vastly overestimated. I'm quoted with, I think, 7 devices. In fact, there are 2. The others crashed, were discarded, etc... Furthermore, checking the works of other people on my list, it appears quite a sizable part didn't send a result for more than 1 year. Is it possible to discard devices from the statistics ? |

Yes we know which is why there are the sssh and Pinocchio emoticons in David Autumns opening post. He's got an issue with the number. I got many too, but what the stats number shows and is impossible for WCG to verify if an old familiar computer is, that those devices registered and returned a result. WCG put some magic in place to reduce these duplicate registrations for BOINC. According BOINCstats the RAD (Recent Active Devices) is about 150,000. Add to that the UD clients and we may be looking at 160-165 thousand.
----------------------------------------Anyway, in another thread Schunken asked about the WCG computing power and the same external BOINCStats site shows it has increased from about 120 Tflop to 156Tflop. People come and go and when schools are out, many will leave for months and reutrn back in September with others in tow. It's on the wish list to show the active number here too, so past the complete UD agent phase out and all its legacies, including this, these 'statistical' items may get [edit: correct spelling]
WCG

i agree with vep.
----------------------------------------stating the number of registered devices for all time is misleading and it smells like poor project marketing on the home page. also the media could easily repeat that meaningless number. there must be a better way; for example stating the number of different countries or organizations/partners involved. these projects run on credibility, not on marketing hype.
