I have been unhappy with the BOINC screensavers ever since we started running them in 2005. They just are not very impressive compared with the ones we had for UD. Of course, Windows has much more impressive support for screensavers, while BOINC tries to be multi-OS. And then I have been following the development of a new BOINC graphics API. And watched while the first pass was then reworked. And this is all part of BOINC 6, which is trying to achieve full Vista-compatibility. (Insert opinions about Vista where TKH cannot see them to censor.) Who knows when we will be fully Vista-compatible? If people want to complain about the screensavers, it will not hurt me at all. A lot of people are devoting man-months and man-years to the graphics. I'm not going to criticize them, but I hope that we eventually end up with pretty graphics. Good eye candy is a great promotional point. The fact that we produced pretty screensavers for the UD client shows that people are aware of this. So I guess that the problem is in the available supporting software. Lawrence |
