The WCG projects are advertised as screensavers, and up until Help Conquer Cancer, they have fulfilled this function nicely. However the graphics on the Cancer project do not change often enough to qualify as a screen saver. What's more, there are certain large sections of the screen that do not change at all, thus subjecting computer monitors to possible burn-in.
For now, I have changed my project preferences back to Human Proteome Folding and removed the Cancer project, which I think is a pity for the cancer cause. Does anyone know if this shortcoming will be fixed on a future release of the Cancer project application? |

Screensavers haven't actually "saved screens" from burn-in for years. Modern monitors don't suffer from it, and anyway you should set your power saving settings to turn the monitor off long before it becomes an issue.
So, this isn't a shortcoming. Don't worry about it. |

I love the screen savers from BOINC projects, and the newest screen savers from WCG, which are Rice and HCC.
----------------------------------------The screen savers do have a value to those of us who are working in offices where others see them and are attracted, then we can tell them about the projects and try to get them to take on this valuable work. I have gotten forty percent of my colleagues into this work because they have stopped at my desk to see what is "that thing" on my monitor. I do need to admit that the older ones from WCG projects were not as dramatic and did not do as good a job for proselytizing. But one could easily see with the dramatic change that occurred with the HCC screen saver, some people in the projects do see the value of the screen savers. The screen saver for Rice is dramatically beautiful, One can see that it was not a difficult proposition for the right graphics person: a good photo, probably altered; the turning "pipes" graphic, etc. >>RSM |

I have to set my computer to be password protected, so i'm patiently waiting for them to develop a boinc version that is able to show the grafics with screen savers protected by password.
any news on that ? no ? oh, shame... |

You sound sarcastic.
Misplaced sarcasm, too, since this particular problem is just about solved. |

Greetings, The password protection and the graphics are currently being worked on and a fix is in place and being tested by the latest BOINC client. If you would like to take a look at it, you can download it from here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.2.2_windows_intelx86.exe BUT, this is not a released version of the client as it is still undergoing enhancements before being considered stable and released. I will say this though, I am running it on a password protected machine and the graphics pull up properly and look good. This does not mean the agent stable and I may need to move back to the 5.10.x client if it causes my machine issues. We do not currently support the 6.x client due to it being in development stages still. Again, this version is still under testing and is not considered a release version. -Uplinger |

I may sound sarcastic, but you sound downright pedantic. Just because you like to set your screen to black and don't use a screen saver, it does not mean there are not others of us who do enjoy the benefits (both practical and aesthetic) of a good screen saver. As mitrichr said on this thread, one of the main ways other people become interested in WCG is when they stop by and notice the "cool graphics" on your monitor. Both SETI and Human Proteome Folding were big hits in this respect, and a lot of my friends did sign up. So, if screen savers are not for you, then that's fine. But please get off your high horse and stop assuming the whole world agrees (or should agree) with you. Thanks. |

I believe you misunderstood me. Read the thread again, maybe it will make more sense.

I am running with screensaver = (none) to save more % for crunching power. It is still possible to select the graphics box in BOINC to see what's going on, which coincidentally looks like the screen saver. It will work either way.
