confused What about my 2nd CPU? (it wants to play too)

Hi,

Is there any way to make this app use both of my CPUs? I have a dual Opteron 248 with 4GB of memory, so it seems like a waste of time to me, having one of these CPUs doing nothing.

Me too, I have a dual 2.0 ghz system. Software should be dual CPU aware.

I have 2 dual 2.8 Xeon boxes, let's take advantage of that.

The software is not currently designed to take special advantage of multiprocessor systems. However, a second processor will probably take up the small load of computing the image for the rotating molecule, which will help some. And, on a multi-processor system, you should be able to run your normal applicaions and still be making great progress on the grid work. Without a multiprocessor, the grid work would be preempted. As more people have multiprocessor systems, we will consider taking advantage of this in future World Community Grid projects.

I'm running a mix of dual and quad processor boxes as well as a Intel Xeon 64 and and AMD 64... I'd like to take advantage of everything I'm throwing at this crying

Well there is one way you could do this right away. You could start up four virtual machines each running a separate copy of windows, using something like vmware or equivalent. Install the agent on each of the four virtual machines as if they are four new devices. Since you have four processors, it should run all four, unless the virtual machine code has some limitation.

And pay for all the licenses...

I prefer different agent versions that can work on multiple cpu's, cpu-platforms and operating systems. This agent is powered by United Devices, and the cancer/anthrax/smallpox projects at grid.org didn't support this either. I think this is strange, since a lot of platforms are not used this way.

And then there is IBM who adopted Linux in it's strategy. Why not put some pressure on UD to bring out a Linux client?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not intending to make a negative post, but I'm merely wondering why these things aren't done yet. There are so much more cpu cycles to gain around the world in this way.

Another thing is the Mac.
I mean if they do a Linux Version, OS X shouldn't be to hard to realize, too.
And with the Mac we're back with the dual processor point: I mean nearly all Macs got dual-processors and don't really use them.
This should give this project some noteable extra power.

just my 2 cents from germany :)

The linux client was only an example, hope I didn't offended the MAC users wink

Re: What about my 2nd CPU? (it wants to play too)

I'm running a dual 3.4Ghz System. As they all hyperthead, it shows up as four logical. Watching the CPU's, it looks like WCG is only hitting ONE of the logical CPU's.

As far as I know, most 3.0+ GHz Intel's have hypertheading. Which means they'll have two logical CPU's. So most people buying new machines will have them.. so the "as more people have multiprocessing systems" may be now...
