Hi All,
I've been running the WCG UD agent on a small windows 2003 box ( 600Mhz/512MB) since 2005 with no problems. I tried to upgrade to the BOINC agent today and it won't work at all. The UD agent successfully uninstalls and the BOINC agent installation finishes successfully. When the manager GUI opens and says registering client the status dots move for 20 seconds or so and then the agent hangs. After a short period longer the entire system becomes unresponsive.. ctrl-alt-delete works but task manager will not launch and you cannot shut down the system. Upon hard reboot the same thing happens when the agent loads. I've uninstalled BOINC and re-installed UD for now. Anyone have this problem or have any suggestions? Thanks Jeff |

Sounds like a conflict with your security software.

hmm. I'm running Checkpoint Personal Firewall and Symantec Corp AV 10.1.5.5000. I accepted all the firewall connection requests from the agent. Do any of those cause known issues?
Thanks! |

Symantec has caused problems in the past. Checkpoint is ringing warning bells in my head, too - but I can't remember why.
BOINC uses RPC on localhost port 31416 to communicate with BOINC Manager. If you aren't getting beyond the "moving dots" displayed by the Manager simple view, then this is almost certainly related to the localhost traffic. I have two suggestions: install BOINC using the "service" option. This means that you will be able to run BOINC without using BOINC Manager. Also, check your firewall and AV software and try to explicitly allow localhost traffic. |
