Hi,
I'm a real linux noob, but keep trying and trying with it. Now, I want to put in a fresh install, but take my BOINC WCG install with me, so as to avoid creating new entries, etc. I've read the FAQ that listed 6 or so critical files that needed to go, so I could copy them over, but can't access the /projects/ directory. How do I get access to copy that, it tells me that I don't have permissions to read it. I can dig around and figure out (again!) how to go superuser and chmod to make that directory (and it's files ?) readable by everybody, is it enough to copy that over, then leave it readable by everybody in the new install ? I really don't want to blow this ! System is ubuntu 8.04 (both the old and the new). Thanks for the help ! |

How did you install BOINC?

I installed it through ubuntu's package manager. I know where the boinc-client directory is and whatnot, and the new installation will have the same version and directory structure, it's just mechanics that have me hung up ! Thanks ...

Honestly, if it were me, I'd run out the work that's on your machine now (you could abort any nonstarted work) and reinstall your OS (or am I reading your question wrong). Then install though the package manager and start with a fresh install.
When installed through the package manager, stuff is spread out all over the system. I'm not a *buntu person so I don't know exactly where. I'm not a Debian person at all, but if I wanted to get at those directories, I'd do `su -` put in my root password and then `su boinc` (or whatever the user name is). But that's on Fedora (RedHat) and I know Debian doesn't use su (much?) and I don't know exactly how sudo works. Or you could do it all as root, but I'd avoid that if at all possible. You'll never know how the permissions might get changed. :-) |

Doing a fresh install including BOINC and making sure the 6 items the server 'queries'
----------------------------------------# user name # domain_name # ip_addr (the ip of the client on the local network) # operating system name # processor vendor # memory are the same and you'd be in good position not to create a new device record at WCG. Restoring to the point of continuing work in progress is a bit more involved on Windows and on Linux more in the 'experienced' domain. Just follow Kathryn's advise and finish the tasks running and suspending the unstarted. After, set work fetch to No, and reset the project to let the servers know that the tasks need to be reissued and set BOINC to network suspended. Then, start your reinstall execution.
WCG
