Boinc as a service - Resolved

As I keep getting told I should load as a service I thought I would give it a try....however....it asks me for "domain name/username" which I have not got a clue about. Username is easy but my domain I have not a clue...as far as I am concerned my domain is England! wink

Not used to this term as I run as a single user and not care about something called a domain....what are they on about please?

Re: Boinc as a service

The domain is usually the name of the computer as it's known on your LAN or for instance WCG has recorded as the device ID. Thus, if WCG knows it as "Son" you enter "Son/Scribe".

Somewhere a member described how afterwards with a service install and removal of password, you could still get it to autostart by changing the service ownership to the Local SystemAccount.... but let us not confuse the issue and take it step by step.

Re: Boinc as a service

So it has in effect to be the WCG device name and WCG username, not the username on my PC?

Re: Boinc as a service

You're installing it on your managed PC even before WCG knows of your existance. It's something different to attaching the client to WCG i.e. the member information, thus all that is entered during the install is the local information incl. password of the system.

It just happens that the device name is mostly the domain name, but, you can make that domain name to be different from the device name. That is something for the advanced master class (and reading a FAQ in the Start Here forum) biggrin

Re: Boinc as a service

Tried it with those settings but it erroed with Faile to obtain SID. Onreflection it cannot be the device namr at WCG as there would not be one if this was a firstime install. The domain and name has to be related to the PC, not with anything at WCG..... sad

Given you suggested it was a re-install, it would have been the same, but if new, than exactly what i wrote. If you open up the System Control Panel it tells you what the domain name is (can be changed if it's garble). In my Italian version it is known as the "Complete Computer Name".

Domain Name: Name of the Computer:
User Name: Name of PC account entered on your computer that goes with the password that is only known on that PC.

Re: Boinc as a service

Yup that seems to work ok, but, it seems not to work if you change the password and restart the PC, but starts to work ok when you change back to the original password and restart the PC again! Surely this cannot be normal as one would expect to change the password regularly and if this stops it working it is a failing?
