I'm running BOINC under Windows Vista. Because the BOINC agent gets intercepted by Windows Defender and prevented from starting automatically, I switched to installing BOINC as a service as recommended in one of the other threads here. However, I've discovered that it's still not starting until I run the BOINC Manager. There's no message, either that it hasn't started or that displaying the BOINC Manager is causing it to start up, but none of the operational processes display in the Task Manager until the BOINC Manager is first run.
Any suggestions for how to really and truly get BOINC to run without any user intervention on Vista? |

Well, a few trick questions:
----------------------------------------What version are you running? There is the services.msc applet. Start Vista menu, type the app name in the run box. When found, right click it and select to runas administrator) There should be a line in the services window that reads either as BOINC or further down the World Community Grid BOINC agent. Right click on either and take properties. It should say there to start the C:\......\BOINC\boinc.exe -daemon in Automatic. If not change it to that. I've actually changed it to Automatic with delay (translated from Italian) to speed up booting, and it really does. If its not running out of the box, it may be that the service was not correctly configured. I could write a manual to fix that, but will simply tell to uninstall, fetch 5.10.45 and reinstall. ciao

Are you telling Task Manager to display processes from all users?
I prefer to configure a separate user for BOINC. |

What version of Vista are u running?
----------------------------------------I'm running 32bit Ultimateon one PC and 64bit ultimate on my quad, and i haven't had any issues with the BOINC client so far. While installing the BOINC client did you leave the "Start with windows" ticked? coz if u didn't u won't be able to change it in msconfig, so i'm wondering if it'll be missing from other places to? like services?

I am running 5.10.45 as a single user on one Vista Business machine and one Vista Home Premium machine, both with no problem.

I'm running BOINC client 5.10.45.
Services.msc reports that World Community Grid BOINC agent is stopped. When I clicked on Start, it reports, "Error 1069: The service did not start due to a logon failure." I figured this might be due to the way I'd installed the service; if you remember our discussion on a previous thread, I don't have passwords on my accounts, which BOINC requires to install as a service. Sekerob suggested temporarily setting a password, installing BOINC, then deleting the password, which was the method I followed. I tried changing the login process by deleting the password for the service login. That doesn't make any difference. Changing the logon from a user account to Local System Account, however, seems to have resolved the problem; the service is now starting properly. I haven't yet rebooted, but since the logon is working properly, that should be OK. If there's a problem, I'll post back. Otherwise, I think I have a solution, which may be useful to others in the future. |

Configuring a separate user for BOINC is still the ideal method.
The next major BOINC version will do this automatically, by default. |

We learn every day.
----------------------------------------There is the 'interaction with desktop' box on the connect tab of the BOINC service properties. Did you leave that off? I'm curious to know if the BOINCmgr will be able to connect if it's off.

I have not checked that box. Both the system tray icon and the BOINC Manager on-screen show correct information. |
