-Broadband connection
-Default connection settings in Bionic Client
-I haven't had these issues before

Re: BOINC won't connect!

hi hoihoi8,

The program is called BOINC which stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing.

Start by following the error window. Hit OK and hit the Advanced (View) button bottom right. Go to Project Tab and tell us if World Community Grid is listed as a project.

After, go to the Message tab and copy a good length of the log entries (select and button on left to copy) and paste in your next post, so we can see what the program is reporting.

Here's 2 links to a wiki explaining more about BOINCmgr:

Simple View: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/Manager

Advanced View: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ManagerAdvanced

Hm, All of those tabs are blank under advanced view.

I made sure the ports are open under windows firewall.

What should I have under Advanced > Select Computer. Mine is blank.

I tried a fresh install but that didn't help either.

Re: BOINC won't connect!

I'm confused because your first post suggested you had things running before. Anything at all happening 2 days ago?

Okay,

- Do Crtrl-Shift-Esc for Taskmanager and tell us if a BOINC.exe is visible

If so,

- Goto BOINCmgr, Advanced menu, Select Computer and simply hit OK

If anything appears in the BOINCMGR windows Project & Message Tab you're okay

If Not,

- Go to the Tools Menu and do Attach a Project > Next
- Select WCG from the drop down list and ok to get to member name / password screen
- If nothing is listed type http://worldcommunitygrid.org/ and okay

Report back if solved or still stuck

It has been working for the past six months. Nothing has changed that I know of. The laptop on the same network still connects ok.

- Goto BOINCmgr, Advanced menu, Select Computer and simply hit OK

Things look the same after I did this.

- Do Crtrl-Shift-Esc for Taskmanager and tell us if a BOINC.exe is visible

It is visible in the taskmanager.

- Go to the Tools Menu and do Attach a Project > Next

This gives me the same error as the image in the first post.

Re: BOINC won't connect!

Okay. First, this isn't a problem with your Internet connection.

The problem is that the different parts of BOINC can't talk, probably because your security software is blocking it. This happens sometimes, and is especially annoying when it happens without informing you.

To fix it, open the control panel for your security software or firewall, and find the rule that is blocking BOINC. Change it to "Allow" and things should work again.

Please let me know what security software was causing the problem, so we will be able to help users better in the future.

And of course, come back to us if this doesn't work or if you need further information.

Thank you.

Re: BOINC won't connect!

Ok, so I looked, and Boinic isn't blocked in the windows firewall. Boinic Manager and the ports are allowed access to the internet. However, I think I realize what is causing the problem.

I have a Win Xp machine. For work on this computer, I use VMware and a virtualized Ubuntu OS.

I thought back, and my Boinic stopped working around the time I last updated my VMware client (it had been a while and it had tons of updates), so I think that is causing the error.

Product: VMware Player
Version 2.0.2 build-59824

Note: I run the Boinic in Windows only

Re: BOINC won't connect!

the Advanced > Select Computer > "localhost" thing still doesn't work. Anyone have anymore ideas on how to connect the World Community Grid client to my computer?

Is there a way I can force the errors to print somewhere, or maybe manually connect it?

Re: BOINC won't connect!

Are there any WCG_xxxxxx processes running within the VM environment? IF so BOINC is working all. right, but the GUI is just not able to connect to the daemon/core client. If not, that would too explain the lack of connection (but before you said you saw BOINC.exe, so not likely)

There are 4/5 ways to do the connect. It's covered in a Start Here FAQ i think.

Just wonder how BOINC.exe got started? Single user install in fact the BOINCmgr initiates it.

Re: BOINC won't connect!

the Advanced > Select Computer > "localhost" thing still doesn't work. Anyone have anymore ideas on how to connect the World Community Grid client to my computer?

BOINC consists of multiple modules (boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe, boinctray.exe, boinccmd.exe and boinc.scr) that need to communicate with each other on TCP port 31416. If you don't allow BOINC to communicate on the localhost through the firewall, you can get problems like this.

Checking in Windows Task Manager if boinc.exe starts up when you start BOINC Manager is a good way to see if everything works.

-If both boinc.exe (the client) and boincmgr.exe (the GUI) show in Task Manager, but you get the message that BOINC Manager cannot connect to the client, then you didn't allow them to talk to each other through your firewall.

-If only boincmgr.exe shows in Task Manager, then the client never started up, or it crashed. If you didn't manually end it on the list there, that is. This may be a permissions problem, a corrupt install, or just dumb luck. Reinstalling BOINC or doing a repair install from Add/Remove Programs should fix this.

-If both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe show in Task Manager and you allowed all parts of BOINC to communicate on TCP port 31416, it may be that you have a password problem. Usually going Advanced->Select Computer->Leaving both boxes empty, then clicking OK (not using Enter!), will fix that. If not, make sure you exited BOINC completely, then navigate to your BOINC directory and delete gui_rpc_auth.cfg

Restart BOINC and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, go back to gui_rpc_auth.cfg and open it again. Now delete the key in there, then insert a password of your own. Press Enter once. Save the file and restart BOINC, going to Advanced->Select computer->fill in localhost and your password, click OK.

Is there a way I can force the errors to print somewhere, or maybe manually connect it?

The failures to connect are shown in Windows Event Viewer->Applications log.
