Been a fairly regular contributor using the old UD client, and although I dont exactly love the BOINC client I want to get it running on my Core2 Duo machine at work, for a bit of hardcore crunching.
Problem is, im having no success installing it - the PC is an imaged type, with a managed image - not asked the dept yet but im hoping to try some things first. The error I get is "1. The installScript engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup. If available please install the latest version of ISScript.msi, or contact your support personnel." I've tried updating the ISScript.msi using the instructions here, and had no success doing it: http://knowledge.macrovision.com/selfservice/...lId=Q108158&sliceId=1 Anyone got any tips/ideas/any other installers for BOINC? Cheers! |

Yes, think you need the Windows Installer Pack version 3.1 for it to work (managed, you wont be allowed most probably to install that either). What windows is this (W98/XP/ME/W2K)?
----------------------------------------You could install BOINC to an up to date PC, copy the lot, delete client_state.xml and client_state_prev-xml and the account_wcg.org.xml and reattach the WCG project, so the servers will recognize it as a new client. At any rate, speak to IT since it's not your machine and company policies vary of what is and what is not allowed to be installed in software, even if just placed in the user data area.

Thanks Sekerob, I've tried the 3.1 Windows Installer but it still gives the same error.
Daft thing is... i am in the IT dept - just on Service Desk, and so theres a different team who look after the MDS - managed desktop service. I do have local admin rights on the PC, hence being able to install the UD client. Windows XP SP2 systems all round, Vista can whistle for its tea.... What did you mean exactly with the 2nd sentence? As in, install to home PC, copy directory to a USB stick, then run the .exe and connect it up to the grid? Not tried that yet, but might be the best/only option remaining. |

Sek means to install it on a different computer and then COPY it over there. You would bypass the Windows install package on the problem computer.
----------------------------------------If you are wanting to use BOINC in addition on the different computer where the install was run, I might wonder whether another repeat delete/install would be needed. Having two devices out there with the same name couldn't be too cool. Every install should add a new [internal to WCG] device number.

I AM wanting to run BOINC on a different computer to where the insaller has been run - but I dont follow the last line - I thought the client ran off usernames? Or would deleting those files Sekerob mentioned solve that problem? Cheers - cant test until tomorrow anyways. |

That was the plan sir. The recreating during startup and WCG re-attaching would make the registration pick up the new clients domain name preventing duplication and confusion at the server (and for yourself when looking in the Result Status pages on the website).

Thanks everyone for your help - Just to let you know I got the files off my home machine last night and rigged it up - was fine once I popped the proxy settings in under advanced mode!

When in the installer does it come up with this error? Can you try to use the /a flag on the installer? To do so, go to a command line window, type in the full path to and name of the BOINC installer file and add a space and /a after it. The /a option merely unpacks BOINC to a space of your liking. If that works, you don't really need to install it on a different PC first, before you copy over all the files.
