New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

Hello all,
Yesterday I received 2 beta HCC Wu's on my Ubuntu 7.10.
The first one was about ¾ done, when I saw that runtime was elapsing even when it was paused and another workunit proceeding.
The system monitor was reading the same amount of % CPU for both HCC-beta and the other workunit.
Another thing I'm wondering about: should this beta HCC WU show graphics, since using the graphics tab seems to do nothing at all. From the result-log I can read quiet often:
freeglut (graphics_app): failed to open display ''
The stdoutdae.txt file gives no relevant information.

After all the WU finished valid.

Have a nice day,
Path7.

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

As in previous Beta's graphics are taken out to eliminate possible sources of problems. In the case of HPF2 for Linux, think they never got graphics because of the problems they were causing.

Can you explain that pausing a bit more. What is/was the Status column saying for that job?

If that paused unit finished valid and the other one, it's at least positive.

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

Hello Sekerob,
Thanks for your reply. I don't need to worry about the graphics.
About your question: The HCC beta WU just changed from running to preempted in the Status column. Meanwhile another WU (to precisely Rosetta@home) changed from preempted to running.
From that moment both the preempted HCC beta WU and the running R@h workunit were running together with the same % of CPU usage. I have chosen: keep in memory while preempted, from the preferences.
To be more clear: I'm running a single core AMD 3000+ 1.8 G Hz processor, so I don't expect 2 Wu's running at the same time.
After seeing this I rebooted the PC which let the wu run by its own so far.

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

A single core machine actually running 2 simultaneous is only possible if BOINC believes you have 2 crunching cores available..... was there not a previous discussion of your machine switching from 2 to 1 process or the other way around.... someone did.

Do your preferences anywhere say to permit 1 or more processors (website profiles or local preferences)

What version are you running (sorry but I don't remember all the versions different members use)?

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

Hello Sekerob,

I'm using BOINC 5.10.45 the Berkeley-version.
From the opening messages from Boinc-mgr:

za 05 apr 2008 12:16:05 CEST||Local time is UTC +2 hours

The website profile allows Boinc to only run one core.

Right now my second HCC beta wu should be preempted, (according to Boinc-mgr status), but is actually running, altogether with a Rosetta@home WU.
Do you have any suggestions what to do right now? (Besides reboot the computer)

Edit: I've never seen two Wu's running at the same time on my computer before.

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

I can confirm this. I am running Kubuntu 7.04 on a single-core Athlon 2800+ and when I suspended one BETA task it was listed in BOINC as Task Suspended, and another BETA task started listed as Running.

top shows:

Tasks: 102 total, 6 running, 96 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.7%us, 17.4%sy, 81.6%ni, 0.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.3%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 1035784k total, 540552k used, 495232k free, 60500k buffers
Swap: 5277344k total, 0k used, 5277344k free, 281408k cached

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
6121 orange-g 39 19 34576 29m 1720 R 49.7 3.0 6:20.71 wcg_beta3_img_6
6088 orange-g 39 19 41076 36m 1724 R 49.4 3.6 109:20.68 wcg_beta3_img_6
6281 orange-g 15 0 2316 1160 880 R 0.3 0.1 0:00.02 top
1 root 18 0 2908 1844 524 S 0.0 0.2 0:01.18 init

Edit: I resumed the suspended task and its status changed to Waiting to Run, but both tasks were still running according to top. I then rebooted and now the original task is running using 100% CPU and the second task is now listed as Waiting to Run. It appears that the WCG application is not suspending when told to. I have seen this on another boinc project in the past.

Hello BobCat13,
Thanks for your reply. I'm wondering if there are more people not realizing they have a “unstoppable” beta application.

Have a nice day,

As you can see no other projects started running in between the restarting task messages, and for awhile the Betas where the only app. allowed to run.

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

We will definitely look into this. Thank you all for reporting this.

On the plus side there have 504 results returned so far in this beta test. Only 4 of those were errors. Of those 4 that were errors, 3 came from a machine that is a 'cycler' which means every result on every application is being returned in error.

This is a very good outcome and means that the problem with the errors have been resolved.

However, we cannot release this until we resolve the issue of the application not suspending when it is requested to suspend.

Re: New Beta Test for HCC on Linux

Hi knreed,
I'm seeing a similar issue to that noted by Gamma-Ray, BobCat13 and Path7. I've got 3 Beta HCC WU's in progress but they keep restarting repeatedly. None of them ever get beyond a few fractions of a percent of beng completed before restarting. In the BOINC manager app the CPU elapsed and estimated completion time are all incrementing. I tried suspending all of them and 2 of them suspended cleanly, while 1 of the jobs kept running for approx 2 minutes (as displayed in top on the system).
The task that was slow to respond eventually gave the following message in the BOINC message window

Task '<full WU name>' exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project

The <full WU name> was the name of the WU - not the literal text :)

If there's any benefit to leaving these jobs running (getting a core dump etc) just let me know. Likewise if you think these jobs are goners let me know and I'll put them out of their misery.

System is HP X4100 (2x Xeon 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, Fedora Core7)

Cheers
Sean
