I'm fairly new to the project, but 70 hours hardly seems excessive for these huge workunits. My system is by no means a powerhouse (P4 2.66 GHz 720MB), but my current workunit has been processing for 23 hours now and is only 47% complete. In fact, the work unit deadline is tomorrow at 6PM, so I might not even make it. I'll leave my computer on all night in the hopes that all the work that's been done so far won't go to waste...
I was curious if there is any way to somehow download smaller work units or maybe have the deadlines not so short? I am participating in 3 other projects as well and do not leave my computer running 24/7. |

Hello TheGreatCornholio,
Welcome to World Comm Grid, Sekerob did a nice post where he listed the project workunits based on ram and deadlines. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=19411#159608. The present ram/vm size needs can be found in the Matrix FAQ of the Start Here forum. From small to large memory needs with due times: 1. HCC (10 days) 2. HPF2 (20 days) 3. FA@H (10 days) 4. DDDT (14 days) 5. AC@H (10days) If you do not complete your current workunit by its deadline, then you might try changing your profile to just crunch HCC or HPF2 and see if you can meet the deadlines. Thank you for helping here at World Community Grid! |

Hi, thanks. It looks like it's not going to make it. It's due in 7 hours and BOINC says it has 9 hours to completion. (Plus the fact that BOINC only uses a second of CPU time about every 2 seconds of real time when the system is idle, even though I've set it to use 100%)
I think one of my problems is that even though I have set "Leave applications in memory while suspended?" to "no", rosetta does not release its' memory after being suspended. Does anyone have a fix for this? My system does have RAM free still, and I've set it to use 95% of RAM when idle... this still does not seem to speed up computation so I'm not sure this is a memory problem anyway. I did also originally join HCC, but I have yet to get any workunits. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Assuming you used the local settings, not website, go to the Activity menu (Simple View > Advanced View button > Activity menu) and select Run based on Preferences. That should force the 100% CPU use. Rosetta@Home ? Memory release is managed by the OS. If the active program needs it, the other 'pre-empted' process will be pushed to the virtual memory, that is, if it has not reached an actual checkpoint. If it didreach a checkpoint, BOINC will unload it. The LIM function helps to speed up the restart after project switching per the schedule. If your job progresses, which it should when in deadline trouble and it's just a few hours overdue let it run. Let us know what happens.

Hello TheGreatCornholio,
(Plus the fact that BOINC only uses a second of CPU time about every 2 seconds of real time when the system is idle, even though I've set it to use 100%) If the System Idle process ever goes above 0%, then your preferences are not running at 100%. BOINC should use every cycle that is not being used by another process. Lawrence |

Hi, Assuming you used the local settings, not website, go to the Activity menu (Simple View > Advanced View button > Activity menu) and select Run based on Preferences. That should force the 100% CPU use. Yes this was one of my issues. I had just used the website settings. Local settings were 50% CPU. It seems that some of the website settings affect the local ones yet others do not. Yes, Rosetta@Home. It's still using 57.5M of memory and 145M of virtual memory on my system, even though it's not running. If your job progresses, which it should when in deadline trouble and it's just a few hours overdue let it run. Let us know what happens. Okay, thanks.. Will do! |

If you want to be sure to only web or local, open the local preferences in the advanced menu and operate the Clear button and Save. That will force the use of the website prefs.

Well the work unit went 3 hours or so past the deadline (32.5 hours of CPU time), but it looks like I still got credit, so that's good. Thanks for the help folks.
