Question about WU

I have a question regarding a WU that I did. I had my computer crunch faah3314_ZINC03954490_01_xMut_md01120_00 for over 70 hours and claim 299 credit since it was so large. But today I find I only get 70 for it. This is so little for the work that I had to do. Does anyone know why there is a 200 difference for such a large unit?

Re: Question about WU

We've seen a few and for unknown reason a unit runs abnormally slow. Someone a 2 days ago restarted a unit after 70 hours absent progress / stuck at 21%. After he did that, the job restarted and completed in 6 hours.

Because the 299 claim was so much off, the rules applied look at what is reasonable for the job and usually assigns the credit claimed by the second copy computed by someone else (for verification). Visit My Grid > Result Status > click Work Unit name to see the other copy's details.

Re: Question about WU

That computer time does seem excessive.

This illustration of the averaging process from another project compares 2 results. I finished it in 3.76 hours and claimed 77.6. The other person took 17.32 hours and claimed 83.8. We both got 80.7 for it.

Re: Question about WU

I understand how the averaging works. It is too bad that it took so long to do. Nextime I see something that long I will try to restart it. It is hard to judge though when it will be that big. If the problem is unknown then I guess there is nothing I can do about it. Will that be fixed? With that problem I then lost a couple days of crunching. Oh well....Win some lose some! haha Thanks!

Re: Question about WU

You might try a different project to compare, although AC@H is wrapping up. Don't expect any of those.

I used to see some excessively long workunits on a Win98 0.5GHz machine after it had been running for awhile. (memory leaks?) After the machine was rebooted, the workunit resumed and finished quickly. It has been retired since then.

What version of BOINC, what kind of machine and OS are you running it on?

Re: Question about WU

I am running Win 98 Boinc 5.10.45 and it is a PIII 900 MHz with 640 megs ram.

It could be the Win 98 that is causing the problem. It is too slow to run win xp and I have been meaning to format and put 2000 on it but I have not had the chance.

Didn't think to reboot the comp during the computation... Will have to remember that for next time.

Re: Question about WU

Yes Sir, W98 likes to be kicked booted on a frequent basis to rid all the leaking building up over time.

Re: Question about WU

Do you need Windows on it? Put Linux on it and you might be in better shape.

On other notes, we will be updating all of our applications to the new BOINC Graphics API over the next month or so. One of the key drivers behind this is hopefully a reduction in errors due to graphics drivers but also, there were some problems with the way the cpu throttle was implemented on BOINC and the newer application API includes some fixes for that. We hope to solve both of these problems at the same time with the upcoming updates.

Put that on your reminder list for at least once/week.

Re: Question about WU

Thanks. I appreciate all the positive, practical feedback. It has really helped.

As for linux...I was kind of waiting for the new LongTermSupport Ubuntu Linux 8.04 to to come out. What else would you recommend?
