why the upload delay?

Is there any reason for the delay to upload WU data after completion? A FAAH WU had completed over 6.5 hours ago, and it just went on to the next WU without sending the data. It always gets around to it eventually. If I click update, it sends the data immediately. Just curious.

Tried searching for this subject, and couldn't find anything.

Re: why the upload delay?

The actual result upload happens immediately. The reporting part waits until the next scheduler request. It is more efficient that way.

The amount of time before reporting will depend on your BOINC preferences. Work is always reported before the deadline.

Actually, I was concerned about the quoted part of your response too, with the tighter deadlines for some projects. Thanks for your response, Didactylos.

Re: why the upload delay?

I have 5 Results to Upload. The other Projects have no Delay. I use Boinc 6.1.8. Download is OK.

Re: why the upload delay?

There is NO delay in uploading, it uploads as soon as it finishes. There IS a delay in reporting....which is NOT the same thing!

Re: why the upload delay?

Hello Jens Terhaar,
As Scribe says, the result is uploaded immediately. The Report delays for a while in hopes that several reports can be made at once, reducing the workload for the database operation/s.

It is explained in Start Herer: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16783
also in http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?langu...dc320f4eb222b3c9cd4dd1e82

This one puzzles everybody at first!

What Lawrence and Scribe said is perfectly true... normally.

However, since you use a test version that might be worth checking the chronology of events in the Messages log from the Advanced view.
You should see uploads starting immediately after a task completes, and Reporting requests passed later together with requests for new work units in the same transactions. If not, please come back and tell us.

Cheers. Jean.

shock
JmBoullier caught what I missed. You do not seem to realize that BOINC 6.1.8 is an Alpha version of BOINC for Alpha testers. The most recent stable version is BOINC 5.10.45.

Re: why the upload delay?

Sitting back and watching.... there is alpha alpha 6.1.8b I read in a PM and elsewhere the alpha alpha 6.1.10, certainly for Mac, but not involving. Issues with 6.1.xx are for the Berkeley developers forum and specifically aimed at involved 'testers' that go through a program to identify problems. Generally I'd expect 'testers' to know most of the innards and functioning and behaviors. If not, uninstall and use the recommended 5.10.45 of which we do know reasonably well how that's to act.

All that said, the 6 series has an additional RtR (Ready To Report) configuration option which is aimed specifically at those who do things like Deep Freeze i.e a daily clean install of a work partition. That will push out completed work because at the end of the day those systems go 'poof' and delete the whole partition content again. It's a necessity for them, but not appreciated if not running such a set-up. The RtR's will clear in the most efficient manner when BOINC thinks it's time.... those points wont go away, not today or tomorrow.

So until then, when we see WCG announcing a Beta of 6, just don't put it into production.

And, we read too much of the ".... The other Projects have no Delay.... " and other variations. It's pure coincidental. BOINC is BOINC is BOINC and applies the same rules at any project. WCG differs in only about 5 things:

1. It employs SSL/HTTPS secure comms, which to my knowledge no other project does.
2. Extensively uses on-the-fly download and upload file compression to minimize bandwidth usage.
3. Has a Simple View Skin of it's own with WCG icons showing in System Tray when the BOINCMgr GUI is running.
4. Uses member/password when attaching project instead of email/password
5. Does not allow 3rd party BOINC Account Managers to write to the website profiles (yet).
