Nice to see that most of the projects got updates this month, any word on this one? Are they working on the paper or is it all still on getting the DB up to scratch. It should be good once it is up and running as it links with so many projects that other WCG projects and many other already use.

Hello MONK_DUCK,
Last I heard, the database was working so they were trying to get a paper through the peer review process. Lawrence |

my opinion: any scientist using wcg should be asked to post here at least every 30 days.
also i'm still curious about what problems have gone on here: was it bad programming? was the idea not well thought out? these projects deserve openness and feedback regardless of errors. |

I completely agree, that is after all the point of research and development in the academic community. If one researcher finds something didn't work or that there were problems for whatever reason then letting the other know is a really good thing. Plus the fact it gives a realistic view of modern research rather than something where you make an amazing discovery every other day of the week! |

Or, you could simply believe what we tell you, and be patient.
Your choice - but this option causes less stress and anxiety. |

The final goal of this project was to get a public database in place for other researchers to leverage. This database is now finished and is waiting for the acompanying scientific paper to be accepted and published. This paper was submitted last week but we are not sure when it will be published. And yes, the database may not have been well designed in advance and then they ran into some performance issues. That's all behind us now and all the researchers need is to get the paper accepted and published. We've asked the researchers to keep an eye on database traffic. |

Sounds good, papers can take a surprising amount of time so it could be a while :)
----------------------------------------Or, you could simply believe what we tell you, and be patient. Your choice - but this option causes less stress and anxiety. It is not really about belief, it is about knowing your time has not been wasted (that does not mean we need great results straight away, that can mean we are learning from our mistakes.) This is after all run/part funded by a commercial company so the best idea with bad news is to forget about and certainly not post about it! This is very much what it looks like when all the communication dries up. For the sake of giving up a very very small amount of time the wcg or the researchers themselves could have given regular updates on the project (say 2 hours worth over the whole year for 12 updates tops.....) So the database wasn't designed 100% perfect in the first place, well not many are! Admitting to mistakes and problems doesn't mean they've done a bad job it means they are researchers doing there jobs. [Edit 1 times, last edit by MONK_DUCK at Apr 27, 2009 7:17:14 PM] |

Hi MONK_DUCK,
It is really difficult for us to give regular in-depth progress reports about database problems without sounding critical. This is really much easier coming direct from the project scientists. Personalities are different and not all scientists are eager to report continuing problems. We gave minimal progress reports because we were not closely involved in the work. The situation was frustrating but we will have to settle for calling it a learning experience and try to use the lessons learned in briefing new projects. Lawrence |
