Re: Work may be reduced for long periods when server is down

Hi densnaps, it's a little miracle as your disk permission is still set to 0.0 GB and after the reinstall (did you completely remove BOINC?), there is still the Override file. Anyway, lets not mess what is not broken, but still suggest you go to the local prefs and increase the disk setting to 2GB (default is in fact 10 GB).

Would you please post the content of the global_prefs_override.xml

cheers

Re: Work may be reduced for long periods when server is down

I've modified the scheduler now so that it will send the user a message in this case where you aren't receiving work. It will look something like:

3/19/2008 11:10:37 AM|World Community Grid (Dev)|Message from server: No work sent
3/19/2008 11:10:37 AM|World Community Grid (Dev)|Message from server: No work is available for Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together
3/19/2008 11:10:37 AM|World Community Grid (Dev)|Message from server: No more disk space available. -89325.43 MB available. Please check your preferences

This will let you know how much more space BOINC needs based on your preferences before it can send you work.

I have also added additional logging so that I can go back and get more information about what happened. So far all that I see is that people have large settings for the value of 'Disk Min Free GB' setting.

Re: Work may be reduced for long periods when server is down

Well, I don't do house calls to the UK, but maybe one of your more confident team bodies in the neighbourhood could pop around and you spend some time together front of the display.... and have a Beer that Scientist make smarter too ;D

Think if the basic machine is booting, but just not crunching, you best just completely uninstall BOINC, delete any tracks in the "C:\Program Files\BOINC directory and do a true clean install with the WCG package that shortly will be upgraded to 5.10.45 (link available in Beta forum). Who cares about an extra device registration.... in the end it's about getting the darn computer submit to the human persevering force :D

I don't know if this is still needed, and I'm having trouble posting the third file.

Re: Work may be reduced for long periods when server is down

Hopefully the new messages will identify diskspace issues more exact. Sample of your prefs can cause trouble:

<disk_max_used_gb>4.0</disk_max_used_gb> okay
<disk_max_used_pct>80.0</disk_max_used_pct> okay
<disk_min_free_gb>1.0</disk_min_free_gb> but what if that space causes the net available not to be sufficient to run a couple of projects simultaneous? e.g. there really is only 1.5gb free, you want 1 gb to be left alone, so 0.5gb is what *can* be used (and 80% at that).

Overrides only kick in for the fields populated, so it's best to use an either / or approach... use the website settings completely or only local prefs to avoid any confusion.... and not sure if you open up local prefs, but they could be showing a mix in older versions. Didactylos is the prefs man as he's involved in coding that interface part.
