S.M.A.R.T. indicated the Maxtor drive on one of my older crunchers was failing. Since it's just a cruncher and nothing else, I copied the BOINC folder onto a 2 gig USB drive and it's been working ever since. That was two years ago. The machine stays on 24/7 so actual hard drive accessing is minimal after initial bootup and Windows loading. Most of the action is to the USB drive. Who knows how long the system will run this way, but it's added some life expectancy to the HD. True ... but then there is the irritation factor. It stops the boot immediately and you have to F2 to continue. As soon as VISTA loads, it grays out the screen and pops up a message basicly saying backup, shutdown and replace drive. Then every 30 min or so it pops up a screen saying basicly the same thing. I could uninstall S.M.A.R.T of course but it does provide other good invormation. Copying to an external drive is a good idea. I have a 500 gig being delivered Mon. The 250 gig external I have somehow mysteriously got filled up with  "liberated" copies of movies and backups. I could use that one but hate to waste a 250 gig drive for one BOINC folder. But I found an unused 250 gig internal drive in the parts drawer last night and I have the copy utility so I think I will give it a try. Never done a VISTA disk-to-disk copy and I imagine there are some hoops to jump through as "Uncle Billy" would rather I buy yet another copy of his sh!+y OS.   I've used up all my XP licences or I would dump VISTA!!  |

Fixed it! That was easy. Back to full strengh.

I know that name....is this he? http://mapage.noos.fr/udskyfleur/cruncher/cruncherpages/g/gandalf.html I don't know what he looks like GM, but 'Gandalf the White' is an interesting name Folks like you, Olivia, Gromet, Mike (USAFA), Shieldy etc would probably remember him as 'Bullmoose' over at Grid when he wreaked havoc at Team Liberty This person has joined the team I am part of on the 10th of april under the name of "Bullmoose" and hasn't returned a single Job. Must be quite a sad person really if he has nothing better to do. |
