Re: short deadlines

It's a reward for good performance :-)

As you probably know, not all work units that World Community Grid send out get returned. To make up for the missing ones, they have to be sent again. For maximum grid performance, these work units are sent to reliable computers (like yours) with a short deadline so that BOINC gives them high priority and they get returned quickly.

Re: short deadlines

That's a joke right?

Presumptuous and ridiculous.

Thats a bit harsh Captain smile I'm happy with that reply and is pretty much what I had guessed. All units should have no problem making the deadline

Re: short deadlines

knreed has worked up an algorithm that asks for makeup work units in 20% of the normal deadline duration, plus a special factor the server computes for each machine. He is quite happy with the way it clears up hanging quorums. He has been asked to consider simply using the original deadline if it is later than the new deadline. The problem is that the server would have to search the database again to find the deadline. The database is not set up to do this quickly. He has put this requested change in a 'think-about-it' pile to consider the next time he redesigns the database.

Lawrence

Added: We started getting questions about this almost as soon as knreed started this short-deadline policy. He mentioned some figures he got from his data analysis software which showed this method really does clear up quorums much more quickly than before. But it does startle our members, which is why we asked him to consider some more changes.

Re: short deadlines

I don't think it harsh at all.
What if these units are sent to someone who doesn't notice and they turn off their rig for whatever reason.

WU's time out and bandwidth wasted on downloading.

EG: Right now I have 3 machines crunching offline........what if they have such work units?

Meh, never mind....nearly hometime tongue

Re: short deadlines

That's part of the "reliable" definition.

Re: short deadlines

Hi vaio!
If you have a look at what goes with a scheduler request (sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml) you will see that you don't need black magic to estimate what you can expect from the requesting client.
Obviously, once in a while, you can be wrong if the client's setup is very special or if its owner is leaving for holidays just on this day but with Kevin's shortened deadline, at least, you know it in one fifth of the normal time.

Cheers. Jean. smile

Re: short deadlines

Previously a Project Deadline FAQ was compiled for the Start Here forum and just updated to reflect the new DDDT of 12 days and some of the explanatory stuff posted was incorporated.

Follow up copies on follow up copies (for repairs or no reply) may have an even shorter deadline, but cant recollect seeing any description of that.
