The cost of grid computing

Just to put into perspective how valuable our resources are to project scientists, and what a great contribution we're making...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Grid

The Sun Grid Compute Utility at Network.com provides easy and affordable access to an enormous computing resource over the Internet for the predictable and all-inclusive price of US$1 per CPU-hour.

So that would be (so far):

$628,617,600 for FAAH
$190,494,940 for HPF2
$55,590,960 for HCC
$35,486,760 for DDDT
$236,520 for AC@H
$32,832,480 for GC
$25,482,840 for HDC
$233,410,200 for HPF1
$70,798,320 for HCMD

$1,272,950,620 Total

205 CPU years/day = $1,802,808/day wink

Re: The cost of grid computing

One wonders what CPU one gets for that. A 8086?

Re: The cost of grid computing

I don't think it's really accurate to put a price on volunteered CPU hours. I don't think these projects would be funded nor exist without volunteers, therefore nobody would be spending money on these types of projects. Also, these experiments guarantee no real world benefit or competitive edge to warrant big investment.

Maybe, a volunteered dollar amount in CPU hours can be claimed when and if any valuable drugs get developed from these projects? And how much power does an hour of CPU time contribute? How many Mega, Giga or Terra Flops?

I think Floating Point Operations(flops) might be a better way to rate progress, rather then a dollar amount. www.boincstats.com reports somewhere around 120Terraflops/sec for the WCG running BOINC.
