Re: Not meeting deadlines

Where have you seen the word "affinity" in my question? smile

I was simply asking if you limited Boinc to use only three cores, thus leaving the fourth one to UD. Then the OS would do what it has to do to have these four jobs running on a fair basis, wherever it finds it best.

Or if you kept Boinc starting four tasks as usual and let UD expect some slices of CPU from the system whenever it can.

Nothing more sophisticated than that, and I fully agree on not trying to play with CPU affinity or anything like it.

If you set 3 cores to do BOINC and run UD on the side, there is no guarantee that UD will run on the free core and positively do not know if Vista would manage that. I'm seeing that horrible indexer sucking up best parts of a core for extended time, so chances are UD ends up sharing 1 core with BOINC.

OK, I understand better. Can't it be disabled in Vista or is it that you like it? In XP I have always disabled it. smile

Re: Not meeting deadlines

Actually, found that Vista is highly dependent on a current index. Switch it off for a few days and even opening up Explorer becomes a trip to the coffee machine before it's loaded.

Re: Not meeting deadlines

I am glad that I was already reading the WCG forums when Vista has been finally launched. Then it has taken me only a few days to realise that I would have to build my next machine myself (for the first time) if I wanted to have decent system(s) inside. Bottom line: Vista is very useful for decision making. laughing
