About a week ago, I went over the list of projects that support the BOINC client, and found SETI@home. Since I have an interest in it, I decided to add that to my projects, trusting the client would give some time to both WCG and SETI work units.
For several days, this worked fine. However, today I saw some behavior that has me confused. WCG work units seem to get paused, in favor of SETI work units. I already have 2 WCG work units paused, with work getting done on 2 SETI work units. From what I can see, the WCG work units were not short on memory or anything. Also, I can not find any lines in the messages tab of the BOINC client to indicate any problem. SETI seems to simply download and start tasks, regardless of what is already running. The messages tab shows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 25-2-2008 9:14:47||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.30 for windows_intelx86 25-2-2008 9:14:47||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 25-2-2008 9:14:47||Libraries: libcurl/7.17.1 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 25-2-2008 9:14:47||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC 25-2-2008 9:14:55||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4] 25-2-2008 9:14:55||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 25-2-2008 9:14:55||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 25-2-2008 9:14:55||Memory: 1014.79 MB physical, 2.90 GB virtual 25-2-2008 9:14:55||Disk: 74.52 GB total, 15.18 GB free 25-2-2008 9:14:55||Local time is UTC +1 hours 25-2-2008 9:14:57|SETI@home|URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 4222018; location: (none); project prefs: default 25-2-2008 9:14:57|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 480457; location: (none); project prefs: default 25-2-2008 9:14:58||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 22-Feb-2008 09:20:48) 25-2-2008 9:14:58||Host location: none 25-2-2008 9:14:58||General prefs: using your defaults 25-2-2008 9:14:58||Reading preferences override file 25-2-2008 9:14:58||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 507.40MB 25-2-2008 9:14:58||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 913.31MB 25-2-2008 9:14:58||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 25-2-2008 9:15:05||Running CPU benchmarks 25-2-2008 9:15:36||Benchmark results: 25-2-2008 9:15:36|| Number of CPUs: 2 25-2-2008 9:15:36|| 1295 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 25-2-2008 9:15:36|| 2028 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU 25-2-2008 9:16:07|World Community Grid|Restarting task lo170_00036_4 using hpf2 version 518 25-2-2008 9:16:07|SETI@home|Restarting task 22fe07af.5774.72.14.7.69_1 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 25-2-2008 15:00:01|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by project. Does anyone else have experience with SETI? Or maybe experiences similar to this? If SETI is a problem, or having 2 projects is a problem, I will probably turn back to WCG only. But I hope it is just a setting I got wrong somewhere. |

Assuming you did not change any defaults, with 2 projects each gets 50% of total computing time. Also with 2 projects, the agent uses the default of 60 minutes to alternate. Those switch points are not exact as they are matched to checkpoints saves so if the computer is shut down and restarted, the science can restart with the least loss of previous computing time.
----------------------------------------Because of the scheduling logic, sometime a project gets more time, particular if checkpoints are very far apart. This and other reasons make that often one project builds up too much computing time at which point the agent will pause the other project until things are in balance again. Some projects have a somewhat aggressive behavior due for instance much shorter deadlines (WCG has from 7 to 18 days deadline depending on the science project). That will be allowed until their so-called Short Term Debt and also the Long Term Debt gets so large that the agent stops fetching work from these projects. This is when WCG will kick in again and SETI will have to sit on the bench for a while. Personally I've increased my project switch time to 4 hours (I change it at occasions). This is more efficient I think as it allows to do more on one job in one stretch. At the end of the day or week or month all is supposed to work out evenly. This in a nutshell i.e. no reason to intervene.

Thank you for the quick (as usual) reply.
Since SETI was recently added, and has work units that are usualy a lot shorter than the WCG ones, I think your explanation sounds reasonable. I will just let it all run so things can settle a bit more. Maybe it is a nice suggestion to include a message about such a pause. |

In yonder days it was usually earmarked in the Tasks window of BOINCmgr as pre-empted or something similar. 'Waiting to run' plus the lack of information in the message log did not improve it, but the demi-gods thought that pre-empted was confusing.
