I suppouse this's not a new question, but I can't find an answer.
I have got three PC at work, and they run BOINC 24x7. Now I have got another one but it's a laptop and I take it home every day. I connect my laptop at work and its BOINC session downloads tasks and works normally, but on friday evening, when I take it home, it stops because I haven't got Internet connection at home (thank goodness! :-) How can I do to download tasks in order to maintain my laptop busy at weekend? Can I force it to download more than 2 or 3 tasks? (Please, don't say "buy an Internet connection". It's not an option :-) Thanks in advance. Sorry if this is not the right place to make this question. |

Go into boinc manager and go to advanced---> preferences---> network usage.
Change the connect every setting to something like 3 days and give additional buffer of say 2 days. That should provide you with a decent sized cache. Adjust to suit your requirements. |

Change your preferences to cache more work: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...iguration.do?name=Default
The setting is near the bottom (select "Custom" first): Cache x extra days of work 3 days should see you past a weekend. Don't set it higher than you need, or you will have problems missing deadlines. |

buy an internet connection...
----------------------------------------well, never mind. BOINC has a couple of parameters to solve this. One is to increase the time between network connections. Another is to increase the work buffer. I usually have enough on hand in the queue to last 2 to 3 days. my grid device manager device profile (default, home, school or work) Workunit Cache Settings Connect to network about every [ ] days Cache [ ] extra days of work You can always connect more often than what you specify. Caution: Do not set higher than 3-4 days. The scheduling manager can get confused and cause the queue to drain completely before sending more work. Deadlines (as above) can also become a problem.

Note: we don't recommend trying to change this (or any) setting via BOINC Manager - doing so conflicts with the web-based preferences.

I'm reaaaallly impressed!
Tanks for your (so fast) answers! Now my laptop works 24x7 and not 8x5 :-) And about an Internet conection, well, my boss is traying to persuade me. He says it's a good idea in order to improve productivity, make the most of time,... blah, blah... you know. Sometimes he push harder and says he'll pay the bill. I'll resist, I swear it :-) Thanks guys. |

One more thing about these settings.
----------------------------------------The length of the queue is the total of both. Perhaps this has always been obvious for some users, but probably I have not been the only one thinking that the work buffer was replacing the network interval for the size of the queue and that network interval was becoming strictly connection related. Usually I had 0.01 for the network interval and 0.5 for the work buffer and I did not notice anything until I set both to 0.03 these last days for testing reasons. And then it became obvious that they were adding up. The "extra" should have been a clue for me, but when one does not want to see... |

They're additive where the 'connect' uses all the safeties and the additional buffer / cache acts exactly what it is meant to be in common language. With 0.3 you'd not see the differential completely but if you set 3.0 and 3.0 you'll find you wont get 6.0 but rather something like 4 to 5.

Is it OK to use the Preferences overide feature within the Boinc client itself for individual machines? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 25, 2008 8:45:23 AM] |

That's what Didactylos is referring to. Somehow we find conflicts, either the user not understanding that any override entry will override everything from the website profile. It's a little messy as sometimes it seems that the remaining settings from the website profile are automatically copied into the override settings file and after folk changing the website and finding these setting don't take hold. This is where the 'Clear' button in the local prefs returns sanity. Unless u must, use the website is the advise. There is a major rewrite pending with release 6 to include the introduction of the preset profiles of WCG into the whole BOINC environment.
