Someone gave me an HP LH3 server to use to run BOINC. My problem is I know squat about servers and i can't get my Windows Server 2003 to load. When it starts it says there were no drives detected. I tried to find a driver for the RAID controller but didn't have any luck ( I'm not very good at finding that kind of stuff either.) So I tried installing a regular IDE drive (that's worked on other servers) but when Windows tries to load I get an error -
----------------------------------------File viaide.sys caused an unexpected error (256) at line 6186 in d:srv03rtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c. press any key to continue. Can anyone tell me what to do and how to do it?!?!?! I'm totally lost. Thank you.

Hello acpartsman,
I'm an ignoramus when it comes to the care and feeding of servers. Using Google, here are some links about ViaIde.sys (?VIA Chipset IDE Driver?). It is a hidden system file that is normally in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers. The file size on Windows XP is 5376 bytes. The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel. http://hardware.mcse.ms/message157933.html http://www.mcse.ms/message1700663.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813861 Lawrence |

I did that same search, the only thing is, Windows isn't even loaded yet. I'm so confused.

Have you looked in the BIOS to see if there is anything about IDE settings or chipset drivers ? Might be worth a wee look ? With it being an old server it might (?) have had IDE disabled and had a SCSI drive before ?
----------------------------------------Also might be worth checking if the jumper on the drive is set to master as with it being so old it might not be able to use CLS (cable select) ? [Edit]Maybe not. I see you have a D: drive.[/Edit] [Edit 3 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 23, 2008 11:00:35 AM] |

The SCSI drives are still in place and the server will communicate with them in BIOS setup (IE it will format them etc) but it will not recognize them during Windows installation. The system battery has died and the RAID settings seem to be gone. The IDE I installed is not recognized in BIOS setup but during the beginning of Windows setup it is seen but that's when I get the error message. I have it set for CS because the last time I tried doing this with the drive set as MASTER, the server would no long see the CD drive. But that was on a COMPAQ so I can try it on this HP to see what happens.
----------------------------------------I do okay with PCs but this server stuff is way beyond me. If it wasn't for the dual processors I'd just install XP so i wouldn't have to put up with all the built in security crap that comes with Windows Server. Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming and I'll keep trying everything. Have a great day.

If you wished to use the SCSI drives, you will prolly need a bootable floppy with the drivers for the SCSI controller on it, so that they will be recognised during bootup from the A:drive before installing windows. If you knew the controller model you could prolly find them somewhere on the net.

A fellow Virginian!
HP Forum This model never supported Win2003. See the HP Support document below for details: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupp...51&prodSeriesId=75195 It looks as if this machine was more friendly with Win 2000 and earlier, probably right at home with NT. You probably want to crack open the case and take a look at the SCSI RAID card, then Google it to find the right drivers needed by Windows in order to see it during the setup process. I'm not too great with servers, workstations are much easier for me to work with, but I would think that a server would balk at using an IDE drive vs a SCSI drive for anything. If the BIOS doesn't see the IDE drive then Windows never will, even with the correct driver on floppy disk loaded at the start of Windows install, during the "Hit F6" screen. I would try sticking to the SCSI drive(s) for installing Windows. You should also see a separate SCSI RAID BIOS during the initial POST or after, sometimes I think it is "Hit CTRL + A for Setup" usually while the SCSI card is detecting the drives, but probably every one is different. There you should be able to set up the RAID on your SCSI drives, and all you need then is the right driver for Windows to see them. Windows should take care of everything else. Sorry for rambling. All these ideas float around in my head and sometimes they get jumbled up ![]() |

Thank you all for your suggestions and info. After changing several settings and moving a few jumpers, Windows loaded right up on the IDE.
----------------------------------------Don't know if the SCSIs are going to work but I don't really care as the IDE drive alone is almost as big as the 6 SCSIs combined. Thanks again and have a great weekend.
