Compatability problem. Windows Defender/Boinc

Hi Folks,
Due to the following Event my Boinc Agent has corrupted. Will there be any problem if I Uninstal, and Re-instal My Boinc Agent, and will I lose any Data or Credits?
I have recently purchased a Windows Vista Laptop which has Windows Defender already installed. Every time I Reboot or re-start, I find that WCG is BLOCKED and will not re-start until I give my permission for it to Run. crying
(It is definitely Windows Defender that is causing the problem as I have given my Boinc Agent 'Exemption' In my Firewall.
Thank you, in advance, for any Help you can give.
Jack.

Re: Compatability problem. Windows Defender/Boinc

The solution is to uninstall and reinstall as service and remove the autostart shortcut. When signing in start BOINCmgr manually whilst the client is already running BEFORE signing in. You can exit BOINCmgr without exiting the service. The only alert you'll get is from UAC. Just okay this.

ciao

Re: Compatability problem. Windows Defender/Boinc

For the simplest solution to this, just install BOINC as a service. It is one of the options in the installer.

Re: Compatability problem. Windows Defender/Boinc

Boinc is not uncompatible with Windows Defender.

What you have described about the program being blocked is normal Vista behavior. You must give permission/allow certain executables to run. Some executables including Boinc write data back to the drive while operating. Vista requires permission to run such programs. This is a safety feature such that an unknown program cannot simply start making changes without your knowledge/permission. You can go into boincmgr.exe, right click and select properties, and grant elevated permission to everyone if you desire.

Re: Compatability problem. Windows Defender/Boinc

The question is not 'compatibility with Windows Defender which still reports BOINCmgr.exe as "Not Yet Certified" and as such it wont allow it to autostart.

If there is a way to allow for it to autostart, please let us know the steps.

The proven work around is the service install with Vista, but that will all change with the restructured release 6 of BOINC.

Re: Compatability problem. Windows Defender/Boinc

Okay BOINC autostart of BOINCmgr and Windows Defender blocking seems to have a work around.
To get BOINC to run at startup, it needs to not require admin. privileges to run. There is a workaround, though, which I'm using successfully (hence my need to re-allow BOINC to run at startup to get the blocking info): Use Task Scheduler to create a task to launch BOINC. You need to choose "Create Task..." (as opposed to "Create basic task...") from the right-hand side of the window under "Actions". I don't remember the specific steps under "Create a task..." now, but when the task has been created, it should have the following properties:

General tab: "When running the task, use the following user account" should be your user account; "Run only when user is logged on" should be chosen; "Run with highest privileges" should be checked.

Triggers tab: The trigger should be "At log on" and the user account in the details should match the one on the General tab.

Actions tab: The action should be "Start a program" and the details should be "C:Program FilesBOINCboincmgr.exe /s". When setting it up, only "C:Program FilesBOINCboincmgr.exe" goes in the "Program/script" box; "/s" goes in the "Add arguments (optional)" box. If you're copying stuff directly from the shortcut, just ignore the "Start in (optional)" box, even though it's in the shortcut. If you try to have it start in the "C:Program FilesBOINC" folder, which is the default in the shortcut, it won't start because in Vista users don't have permission to write to that folder by default.

Conditions tab: I left these at their defaults. I assume they can be changed to taste.

Settings tab: Same as Conditions tab; I left at default.

Anyone volunteering to replicate and confirm with screenshots in most welcome. (I'd do it, but most cant read Italian - purchase of the multilingual Ultimate version is outstanding) After, it will be incorporated into the Vista FAQ.

Many thanks in advance.
