Last night when I noticed it, my machine was running:
----------------------------------------WCG: dddt0401e0246_ZINC08394080-0000_00_0 Rosetta: score13_hb_envtest62_A_1tif__2833_1189_0 They both finished fine and uploaded. A little more info, this morning my computer was running a cancer project with no problem. I suspended it and started another Dengue project. It instantly started having problems. Soon as I paused the Dengue and put it back to the original Cancer project everything was smooth. I also changed my write time from 60 seconds to 600 seconds. bieberj, BOINC does print a message when suspending computation due to insufficient free memory. If the log you supplied is complete, then at no point did BOINC suspend computation for any reason. Didactylos, Please explain to me why the WCG has stopped running when the screensaver kicked in (no processor activity can be seen) and the only way I could get the crunching to resume is to close WCG and restart it. And please explain to me what do I need to do to keep WCG running when screensaver kicks in each time it kicks in. I notice this whenever HCC is running. Other projects do not exhibit this problem at all. |

Hello bieberj,
Screen saver programs can be peculiar. Some seem to affect the computer as though the user is active. If the BOINC flag to 'stop running when active' has been set, this can cause problems. In your case, you have already said that sometimes one BOINC application will stop but another will keep running, so that seems to eliminate the 'active' possibility. I do not know what is happening on your system, but I have several questions. First, what screen saver do you use? I use 'blank', because it uses the CPU least without turning the screen off. (Each cycle on and off strains the electronics in the display, so I have it power off only after a long delay; I 'blank' the screen after only a few minutes.) Second, does your system have special power-down routines that kick in after inactivity - lowering PU speeds, etc.? Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence,
Was using the World Community Grid screen saver. Changed it to starfield to see if it makes a difference. Will try blank if starfield doesn't solve the problem. Basically display will go blank after 5 mins of screen saver. But still keep running unless it is unplugged but WCG isn't supposed to run when on batteries. From power perspective, while computer is plugged in, only the monitor will turn itself off when not in use for 20 minutes. Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I will let you know how I make out. Right now, no HCC job has been downloaded so will have to wait until I get some. JB |

Hi Lawrence,
It appears as if the World Community Grid screensaver is the culprit. It completed two HCC, 1 FAAH projects so far without being stalled and it is currently doing two more, and has not stalled so far when the starfield screen saver kicked in. I hope the problem is solved as the stalling that I report is intermittent. I noticed that when the WCG screensaver is running, there are times when it takes a while to get back to my desktop, starfield gets me to my desktop immediately. Maybe you could submit a bug report on the WCG screensaver stalling HCC tasks? Thanks for your help. JB |
