Huge work unit.... ditch it?

After a succession of small (around 3 hour) work units, my latest one appears to be huge! It's taken over 1.5 hours to take its first checkpoint, which is 0.7%..... At this rate, it will take over 200 hours to complete.

Should I terminate it? Cheers, DG. crying

Re: Huge work unit.... ditch it?

Nevermind... looks like it's terminated itself and given me a more manageable one!

cool Re: Huge work unit.... ditch it?

Some Work Units do not converge to a solution. The program tries hard, but eventually gives up and reports 'non-convergent' back to the server. This information is valuable, so do not feel discouraged. It just means that the range of values you were assigned to investigate imply an impossible fold for your protein.

Some Work Units are 'non-convergent'. Rick Alther talked about them in his early posts. They start out looking like monster work units that will take forever to complete. Then after some time (hours in my experience) they suddenly give up and report back to the server. Then you get a new Work Unit.

A couple of things to keep in mind:
* The time it takes between checkpoints (percent increments) is not linear. It may take hours to do one checkpoint and minutes for the next. The workunits are non-deterministic, so we have no idea how long they'll take. Just a guess.

* Workunits will vary greatly in the time it takes to complete them. Some will take just a few hours, some can take days. This is due to the non-deterministic nature of the computation.

* Some workunits are what we call non-convergant. When we detect this situation, we abort the workunit and return what work you have done back to the server. They're still just as valuable as any other workunit. It will likely take at least few hours to determine this scenario though.
