I noticed this behaviour a couple of times now. And twice today. I rarely look at the graphics but got curious today so I clicked on the graphics and after opening the graphics window, Windows XP instantly hangs and I have no other choice than to force a reboot.
After the reboot I restarted Boinc and unfortunately I made the mistake to click again on display graphics and yes again instantly Windows freezes and once again no other option than to force a reboot. This was twice with a HCC-unit. I remembered that this has happened to me before a couple of times but cannot remember with which kind of unit that was. It's Boinc version 5.10.30 by the way. |

That's not good.
Please will you give us details of your graphics card and drivers? |

That's not good. Please will you give us details of your graphics card and drivers? Fairly new, a Geforce 8800 GTS, drivers are Forceware 163.71, thanks. |

Yes 163.71 is also WHQL. And yes I know there's a new release out but minor changes.

Baron Samedi, the bad news is that in all similar situations, WCG isn't directly to blame. Starting the graphics may trigger the problem, but the problem is somewhere else.
This means it is hard to duplicate the problem, and even harder to pinpoint it. As a first step, please will you try disabling ALL hardware acceleration, and try the graphics again? As an aside: when the system hung, how long did you wait before rebooting? If just the graphics card crashed, then some drivers have a feature where they can just reset the graphics card if they detect it has crashed. |
