Re: It's taking soooo long!

qt314159,
Could you remember if you were doing something particular in this machine while this WU was running? On my P4HT, if I play with certain games, not only the elapsed time to crunch a WU (DDD-T generally) is longer (which is normal) but the CPU time is also greater (by up to 50 %) which has always surprised me.
So, if you were in such a situation I would not say that it is normal but at least it is not exceptional.

Re: It's taking soooo long!

For a longer time I've wondered what a computing second constitutes in BOINC. Does it use rounding when reporting and incrementing?

Re: It's taking soooo long!

Sekerob, this estimated completion time, the RDCF variable, is not just an HPF2 issue.

I'm not working on 2 DDDT WU's which started out with 2:35 estimates and after ten minutes of running were down to 1:29. Most complete at around .7 or .8 on this machine. Pretty much the same with the Help Cure Cancer project.

So the common thread is BOINC and I'm using the 5.10.30 version.

Re: It's taking soooo long!

Correct, flyer122. The DCF affects all projects. In addition, each project has an estimate determined by WCG using a feedback mechanism.

What this means in effect is that a new project, science application version or an error in the estimation will throw all the estimates off balance until the system reaches equilibrium again.

We are, of course, very sorry for the effects that the estimates are causing. It should be back to normal in a few days (although there are upcoming changes to DDDT which will cause more estimation anomalies).

Re: It's taking soooo long!

The endless loop bug mentioned by Lawrence is alive and well. I encountered another one a few days ago.

I just noticed a hpf2 running in a loop. The unfortunate thing is it was only after 34 hours shock that I noticed this. After rebooting BOINC the job went back down to a little over 9 hours with 8 hours left to process. All those wasted hours crying

No need to be sorry flyer122. I should have highlighter the word "all" in my post about the chain reaction which said "which is used to compute the time of all work coming after for WCG.... Meaning any WCG project.

We've before discussed in the Future BOINC thread the assignment of a separate RDCF aka DCF for each WCG project so the precision will be much better in for instance caching, but also to prevent this reverberation thru the whole system.

cheers
