There is an interesting article at http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6955 about how software from http://www.projecthoneypot.org/ can be used to feed trap email addresses to bots scanning a message board for email addresses for spammers.

Webmasters who want to help fight spam can download Project Honeypot's software, which is designed to turn their website into a magnet for harvesters. If the site detects that a crawler is visiting it the software generates a fake email address for the crawler to grab, and records the address of the crawler and the time and date. Interesting, but are you suggesting (since this is in the suggestions forum) that WCG should be used as an active anti-spammer site? Is WCG enough of a target for spammers grabbing email addresses that this would be necessary? Seems like it is easier to just ask people to realize that if they post their email addresses here on WCG or on any other site anywhere on the web they may have that email address grabbed and used by spammers, and they should post email addresses at their own rsk. I don't see where this is a problem that WCG needs to address. |
