Most odd as I can and have entered minimum only leaving the maximum blank. Not something to bust the head over.... long as it works
---------------------------------------- The single processor switch, presuming you entered the setting in the correct web-profile associated with the client needs replication. It should have kicked in on the first client-server contact. Not aware it is required restart the client. A change of processors allowed will invoke a benchmark test which should show in the message log. Edit: Correction, it does not store the value and insists on a maximum entry when the button middle right of the setting screen is operated.

As for the 2 tasks problem, I did set my profile to use 1 processor only. But there are still 2 tasks running. Both were started a few hours ago. superguppie, Your Boinc client will not know about your changing parameters until it contacts the servers, most likely when it will ask for more work. Then, if two tasks are still running it will suspend one and will resume it as soon as the other is finished. Simply leave it do its job and things will finally be as requested. Cheers. Jean. |

The last 2 replies make it even weirder. My machine is started fresh every morning. I set the processor setting yesterday. Since then, all tasks that were active have been finished and reported. New tasks have been fetched, and started.
I have checked the profile again, and it really does say use 1 processor. As with the VM settings, I don't think I will worry too much about it now. It all seems to be working. Ofcourse I wonder what it could be. But that's where it will end for now. |

Possibly your local preferences (BOINCMgr Advanced View, Advanced menu) has a processor entry. All clients from version 5.10.x have local frefs which override the website settings.

Found it. And yes, that one also said use 16.....
Changed it, and one task went on hold almost immediately. Now wondering why there are profiles, if local preferences override, and I can't tell the thing to use the profile. One more problem solved, thank you. |

The local prefs screen has a 'Clear' button to return a client to web-profile use.
----------------------------------------We have an FAQ on profiles in the Start Here forum on top of the . Always honing, added/highlighted a line to explain how to return to website profile preferences.http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033

Ah, ok. so the profiles are more for easy installation of new clients. I thought they were for direct use. From your comments I get the impression that on earlier versions this was the case, and it has recently changed.
And I am glad I have been able to help make the help even better. |

Personally I prefer to use Local Preferences for parameters as machine-specific as RAM or the number of cores.
----------------------------------------But first I did not want to make things more complicated for you, and second I did not know that Boinc installs a default "Local Preferences" now. I shall remember. Cheers. Jean. |

superguppie, JmBoullier: the preferences and profile setup is unspeakable. The system has just grown organically, and has had bits bolted on for years, until it became the fiasco you see. My goal is to simplify things for version six, but I haven't received a particularly warm response for my proposals.
I will persevere. I hope you will help me with the testing phase. |

I agree that it has become very confusing with the mix of items which are more server-oriented like projects and other items which are typically machine-oriented like cores, RAM, disk usage, schedules, etc...
----------------------------------------I like to use the site profile(s) for selecting projects and the local preferences for machine-oriented parameters. However there is still the question of what takes precedence on the rest when you update one or the other. That's where things are becoming more and more unclear now. Therefore I fully support you Didactylos for trying to improve it in the future 6.xx versions and for testing the result of your efforts it you don't make testing too difficult for me. Cheers. Jean. |
