confused Occasional Runtime Errors - BOINC 5.10.30

I'm getting that dialog reported sometimes by others:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: ...orldcommunitygrid.org\wcg_hcc1_img_5.15_windows_intelx86
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information
[ OK ]"

My Windows screen saver is set to "My Pictures Slideshow".

System: WinXP-Pro-SP2, dual 2G CPUs, 2Gb RAM, Dell Latitude D820.

I didn't see anything unusual in stdXXXYYY.txt log files, except for stdoutgui.txt which included 3 occurrences in the last month of this set:

[01/21/08 10:13:32] TRACE [2900]: RPC_CLIENT::init boinc_socket returned 492
[01/21/08 10:13:32] TRACE [2900]: RPC_CLIENT::init connect returned -1
[01/21/08 10:13:32] TRACE [2900]: RPC_CLIENT::init attempting connect
[01/21/08 10:13:33] TRACE [2900]: RPC_CLIENT::init_poll sock = 492
[01/21/08 10:13:33] TRACE [2900]: RPC_CLIENT::init_poll connected to port 31416
[01/21/08 10:13:33] TRACE [2900]: CAN'T FIND PROJECT http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

Sorry, I haven't tried to correlate the Runtime Error dialog with the logs. I'll try to be a more diagnostic user next time it happens.

Thoughts about this problem?

Re: Occasional Runtime Errors - BOINC 5.10.30

stdoutgui isn't pertinent. The BOINC Manager is twice removed from the science application, so there won't be anything interesting there.

The first thing we need is the error code and work unit log. You will find this using the Result Status link. Also, you will hopefully find the debug dump from the crash in stderrdae.txt

You say "I'm getting that dialog reported sometimes by others" - does this mean you haven't experienced the error directly? What is the member name of the person having this problem? Or am I misunderstanding you?

I didn't think so either, just trying to be thorough.
The first thing we need is the error code and work unit log. You will find this using the Result Status link.

That file is zero bytes (and three months old).

Sorry for being unclear. I had searched the forums for this issue before posting, and was merely noting that others had reported it too.

Additional information:
This error occurred again this morning. I had stepped away from my computer for a few minutes, and when I returned the error dialog was on-screen (my screen saver had not activated, so I was away less than 10 minutes). I returned at 10:21 or 10:22. The end of my stdoutdae.txt file was this:

31-Jan-2008 09:45:13 [---] Resuming computation
31-Jan-2008 09:45:16 [---] Suspending computation - user is active
31-Jan-2008 10:08:50 [---] Resuming computation
31-Jan-2008 10:10:36 [---] Suspending computation - user is active
31-Jan-2008 10:18:25 [---] Resuming computation
31-Jan-2008 10:21:48 [---] Suspending computation - user is active

My preference settings in the BOINC client GUI include: "Processor Usage > Only after computer has been idle for 5.00 minutes".

I'm wondering if this error might relate to this idle threshold being exceeded, causing computation to resume. Since the error was on-screen when I returned, my activity (which suspended computation) did not cause it.

This is how I have experienced this error, returning to my machine to see the error dialog. I'm not seeing any errors (in logs or in Results Status) other than the on-screen dialog (excluding some items marked " Pending Validation"). I have no items listed (over the last 2 weeks) as "Pending Validation" or "In Progress" which are past their Time Due/Return Time.

Re: Occasional Runtime Errors - BOINC 5.10.30

hmmm this ""My Pictures Slideshow"" screensaver or other process is likely perceived as a user activity hence the in and out of Resuming computation. Set screensaver to blank to determine.

As for the WU log, click on the link in the Status column of the Result Status page.

This C++ Runtime Library error has been seen a few time. Would have to dig, but think to recollect that it was always on W98 that this happened.

Re: Occasional Runtime Errors - BOINC 5.10.30

Yes, ruling out the screensaver will help.

A CRT error isn't in itself particularly helpful - lots of things can cause it.

I'm unclear on whether BOINC is also crashing. If the science application crashes, this should be shown in the BOINC message log. None of the snippets you have shown include this. Don't be afraid of copying a lot of messages (or use a service like pastebin).

Re: Occasional Runtime Errors - BOINC 5.10.30

It happened again yesterday afternoon. I noticed it at 3:53 PM, when the end of the log was:
31-Jan-2008 11:13:29 [---] Resuming computation
31-Jan-2008 12:31:21 [---] Suspending computation - user is active
31-Jan-2008 13:56:14 [---] Resuming computation
31-Jan-2008 15:46:10 [---] Resuming computation
31-Jan-2008 15:49:39 [---] Suspending computation - user is active
this ""My Pictures Slideshow"" screensaver or other process is likely perceived as a user activity hence the in and out of Resuming computation.
But I've noticed the error dialog on my screen many minutes before the screen saver activates. I could understand that the screen saver may be perceived as user activity which pauses computation, but my observation is that the error occurs before the screen saver activates (i.e. may very well be unrelated).
Set screensaver to blank to determine.
I have disabled my screen saver and will followup with what happens.

confused interim update

No errors since my last post. Perhaps the Windows "My Picture Slideshow" screen saver is the culprit. I'll give it another day or so, enable it again, and report back.

No errors while the screen saver was disabled. I re-enabled the screen saver for a few hours and the error showed once. So I disabled it again to give it some more time to see if the error ever shows with the screen saver disabled. I'll report back after another week or so.

However, I still maintain that enabling the Windows "My Picture Slideshow" screen saver shouldn't cause BOINC errors. straight face

Hopefully, Didactylos will post that he has reported this over at BOINC.

Cant remember, but you may want to try reinstalling BOINC in 'Service' mode. That disables all BOINC graphical functions. Could somehow have crossed swords with the MPS. Beauty of the 'service' is that it will run regardless if anyone signed in at system start up.
