new project?

Hello. I want to ask, if any of the active projects is getting near the end, and if any new project is going to start in near future. Thanks.

Re: new project?

Not immediately.

However, WCG have a number of project launches planned over the next year, including the return of Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy and some completely new projects.

Didactaylos - would it be possible to get an overview of projects that are in the pipeline. The first people know of it quite often is when they start cruching units that they have not seen before.

This may help rally additional members, who have no interest with current projects, but may be more interested in future projects, and may also help retain current members who loose interest with the ongoing project, and change to other grid computing providers.

It is often just as important to know where we are going, then where we are!

Re: new project?

The philosophy of the rollout artists is to not anticipate. We have asked them about it several times.

They don't want to commit to a date for future projects, and then have you complain about bugs in old projects that need fixing, pushing out the launch date. They get nervous about missing goals and missing dates, as it annoys the managers. They'd rather not set one. There are usually several projects in the pipeline in various stages, and 2008 is no exception. Some are awaiting rollout, some are awaiting code, some proposals are being investigated, and some proposals are being awaited.

Be advised that they are working on as much as they can, when they can. They just finished a web update to this forum, which had nothing to do at all with new projects. At the moment, we have 5 simultaneous projects going. Workunits for all of those have to be continuously regenerated and rounded up. It is conceivable that we could have at least one or two, but a few more projects running by the end of the year even before the current ones are finished.

Compare that impressive statistic to grid.org, which had 0 active projects and a couple of "make work" projects. Most other BOINC projects have only one thing active, and that sometimes rarely. "So you want another workunit? We'll have one for you in a couple of weeks." When the one project finishes, some even close down. They're done.

One clue to a new project is the beta test announcement. Some graphics may not be there yet, but something new is getting close. Well, maybe not. It could be that they are just fixing a bug that needs tested.
There they go again.

End dates?

Other projects like FAAH are readjusted by the scientists, depending on what they see in previous results. They like to send more work. "Hmmm. Let's send another million workunits out for this new thingy, and see what happens." End dates are difficult to determine.

New projects are usually added to your project selection and you start seeing strange workunits. Some complain about that, also. I think you will see less complaints, because more members will want to crunch 14 days of all projects to get another project badge, a recent forum feature. The new project will be added to the forum research topic only when the workunits start going out.

Many thanks retsof for the update. I appreciate that medical research and IT development do not lend themselvese to definitive timescales, especially when combined, and that when you announce a pipeline project, the next question is when will it start?, the next being when will it end?

Not sure what to say next in all honesty. Would I rather not know about a future project, or know that it is in the pipeline and wonder when it will start.

Its a difficult one. Any other views?

Re: new project?

We can say general things, like "WCG are always looking for good cancer projects".

Also, WCG are anticipating having more concurrent active projects this year than ever before. This is especially challenging for the grid techs.

Re: new project?

I don't think it's a big secret that DDDT will have a Phase II here smile

In Phase 2 of this project, potential protease inhibitors predicted by Autodock will be organized into a concise database for detailed analysis with CHARMM, a molecular dynamics program developed by Professor Martin Karplus and his colleagues at Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA). Accurate CHARMM-based mean field binding free energy calculations will be applied to all potential protease inhibitors. The post-processing of the initial fitting results with binding free energy calculations will significantly reduce false-positive rates, thus speeding discovery of potent protease inhibitors. Novel compounds predicted to be high-affinity inhibitors of flavivirus proteases will be tested in laboratory assays for antiviral activity.

Re: new project?

Start Dates and End Dates are not very interesting - in my humble opinion. I'm using Boinc/WCG for all projects because I think it can be useful, that's all.

As for the information about new projects, I am - by nature - very curious, and curiosity would be the only reason to have information about the future projects - even if those projects have a 1% chance to arrive on WCG. It's just about curiosity ^^

I understand this is not the most important thing to do, but information is never a bad thing ...

Re: new project?

Next Up is middle/later this year is the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy, phase 2. Anything between Dengue phase 2, first in queue for now, and HCMD2 is positively not for public release and the after could cause trouble in a myriad of ways if discussed publicly. The portfolio is pretty much full with new work and proposals thus we'll be busy at WCG for years to come.

Re: new project?

Thank you Sekerob ;-)

I'm waiting for the HCMD phase 2 ^^ This project was the one the "Star Wars [FR]" team was created for ... but we are happy to crunch for any good project.
